Hi List,
I've been trying to track down John WRIGHT, b. 1848 in Tickhill, Yorkshire.
I found him in 1881, with wife Henrietta and 4 children.
Class: RG11; Piece: 2983, Folio: 43; Page 28
I can't find him after that time. I have Ancestry with access only to UK
Census. Would anyone have access to US Census and be able to have a look
for him please?
His parents were John WRIGHT and Hannah HOLMES. His siblings, David,
Edward, Hannah, Mary, William and Arthur all migrated to Australia between
1883 and 1887.
His parents, John and Hannah died in 1882 and 1885 respectively.
The family story says that the family business burned down and the children
headed to Australia. John stayed in Sheffield to tidy up things there and
then headed to USA where he "made good" and became quite wealthy.
We're not at all sure of this, perhaps it's just legend! I'd appreciate any
info from US Census records to either prove or disprove this theory.
Thanks for any help or suggestions.

Re: John WRIGHT
The 1890 U.S. Federal Census was destroyed, and there are a lot of David
Wrights of a similar age in the 1900 Federal Census, all from England.
I tried searching for a Henrietta, and thought I found a match in a
later ship's list in 1926 (which could have been here going to England
to visit and then returning to the states), but it looks as if she was
living with a daughter, Emma, in Boston. An earlier census record shows
her and Emma coming to the states in 1869.
I did find a few men in Cook County, Illinois who match the ages for
some of John and Henrietta's children - John and Charles, and maybe even
George. But no John and Henrietta.
Have you checked the BDM records to see if Henrietta died in England?
Another possiblity is that the family first went to Canada and then into
the U.S. I know that in the earlier to mid-1800s, it was far cheaper to
take a ship to Canada than it was to the States. They do have the 1906
Canadian census at ancestry.com, but my subscription doesn't cover it.
Do you know if their daughter Henrietta married in England? If so, then
it's possible that she and her husband came to the U.S. with her parents
and finding them might help find the parents.

Re: John WRIGHT
Hi Cathy,
Thank you very much for having a look. As I said previously, I'm not sure
that they did move to USA, we're just going on family legend. Some of the
older family members remember hearing their grandparents talking and there
was discussion about a branch of the family going to America and becoming
very successful.
John WRIGHT is the only member of the family we haven't been able to track
and therefore have assumed it was him. It could actually have been from the
previous generation also, assuming of course that it's correct information.
I'll certainly look into what you've found a bit further and see if I can
confirm any of it.
Thanks again
David

sure if these are all head of households ?
Anyway, never give up looking at the 1890 fragments, as there
might be someone there.

Re: John WRIGHT
I'd checked that before I replied originally , and not a single one of
those Wrights were born in England, which is where John Wright, his wife
and children were born. The more people searching though, the better.
In my experience, Nannie has been a nickname for Nancy.
