Peder Larsen Haugen fra Bardu - utv til USA/Canada i 1850

Legg inn av 5811 » 09 nov 2006 20:04:35

Hei.
Vennlig hilsen
Bodil Haugli

Hello Margit. So nice - so quickly you answered. I am sorry I do not know when he was borned. We know that he lived at the farm Haugen in 1845 and emigrated in 1850. He was the first til emigrate from Bardu in Troms (as far as we know), and Bardu Historielag is very interested in finding out what happened to him. I cannot find that he participated in the Civil War, and I have searched for both Larsen and Haugen. I do not think he was borned "Haugen", I think he only took that name.
I really hope that you can find out more about him.
Thank you very much (so far).
Kindly Bodil

Bodil,

He is mentioned in Deb Nelson Gurley's book that just came out this year. It is "History of the Norwegian Settlements" A translated and expanded version of the 1908 De Norske Settlementers Historie by Hjalmar Rued Holand.

It says under Big Canoe on page 183:
The first to arrive in these parts was undoubltedly Peder Larson Haugen, who settled six miles north of Decorah in the fall of 1850. He was the first to emigrate from Maanselven in Nordland (Bardø subparish).

:D Bodil,
I would think that this is him in 1860 census:

Nordmenn i USA i 1860-teljinga
State County Circuit Page Given name Last name Sex Age Occupation Birth place

15251 Iowa Winneshiek Canoe 863 Peter Larson m 43 farmer Norway
15252 Iowa Winneshiek Canoe 863 Ann Larson f 31 Norway
15253 Iowa Winneshiek Canoe 863 Betsey Larson f 1 Iowa

Then this one should be him in 1880:
1880 United States Federal Census
Name: Peder Larson
Home in 1880: Canoe, Winneshiek, Iowa
Age: 65
Estimated Birth Year: abt 1815

http://www.haugelutheran.com/History.htm

In the early 1800’s in Norway,
Hans Nielsen Hauge eschewed the formalism of the state church, and he led and encouraged home meetings and lay participation in church services. During the
1850’s and 60’s, many Norwegians who had been influenced by Hans Nielsen Hauge immigrated here to Winneshiek County where — by necessity as well as inclination — they continued Hauge’s practices of home meetings and lay ministry.

A Norwegian of the same spirit
as Hauge, Pastor Elling Eielsen, immigrated to America in 1839, where in 1843 he became the first Norwegian-American ordained in the United States. He traveled extensively as a home missionary, and is said to have walked from Chicago to Western Wisconsin and Northeast Iowa on several occasions. On June 10, 1859, Rev. Eielsen baptized Beret Haugen here, the daughter of Peder L. Haugen, who preached and taught in Rev. Eielsen’s absence, and who hosted visiting pastors in his home. Local residents report hearing John Langaas give account of being a Sunday-school student of Peder Haugen’s (describing him as the father of his congregation and the Hauge church), and of telling how these home meetings were conducted.

Under Rev. Eielsen’s guidance, the Hauge Lutheran Church was formally organized in 1872, and plans made to begin construction on the new church building as soon as the charter was obtained (in 1874).

Land for the church site was purchased from William Putney and his wife for $22.50, and the warranty deed is dated Christmas Eve, 1873. The pastor then was Swedish Rev. Frederick H. Carlson who served from 1872-80, and oversaw the building construction with Peder Haugen. The builder was Paul Verner, and he utilized local help (including Daniel Hanson and Borre Voorhus) to quarry the native limestone just south of the church site, and to construct the stone walls. Pastor Carlson performed the first marriage here on June 29, 1877 — that of Mr. & Mrs. Lars L. Iverson.

From that day to this, loving couples have chosen this beautiful, intimate place to exchange their vows, and to begin their lives together, sanctified by God.

The history of Hauge Lutheran Church reflects the service and giving of generations of dedicated Christians. The list of pastors and teachers after Pastor Carlson includes: Iver Hatlestad, Peter Stenerson, Wilhelm Rasmussen, Mrs. Peter Petersen, Ole Glesne, Christian Heltne, and Hauge’s longest-serving pastor (1926-51) Carl Losen who suffered a fatal heart attack just prior to the congregation’s celebration of the 75th anniversary of the building’s dedication.

After Rev. Losen’s passing, Rev. Orville Running of Luther College filled in until Rev. Virgil Hougen arrived — who subsequently left to become superintendent of the Aase Haugen Home here in Decorah. Then came Glen Vanderbilt, Wallace Larson, Dennis Heifner, Dolliver Thogerson, and Gerhard Brase.

In 1921, the Hauge congregation formed a cooperative agreement with St. John’s congregation in Locust to jointly finance a parsonage and to share pastor’s salary. The cooperative agreement with St. John’s continues to this day.

The Peder Larsen Haugen Story
From: Haugen-Talhauf Relationship
By: Arnold O. Haugen

Peder Larsen was born February 2, 1816, at Tynset, Norway. His ancestry has been traced back to 1656. Tynset is on the Glomma River in Osterdalen, Hedemark Province. His parents were Lars Jonson Nesset and Anne Jonsdatter Neby. His mother had given birth to a daughter by a previous marriage to Tollef Arneson Moen. That daughter, Kari Tollefsdatter Brukroken (1808) therefore was only a half-sister to Peder Larsen. Data on her descendants and pioneer life in Ottertail County, Minnesota, are available in a publication on the “Nelson-Moen Family” (1938). Peder Larsen also had a half-brother, Jon Larsson Nesset (1826), born following his father’s second marriage (to Ragnhild Estendatter Stromseng, b. 1793). Three of Jon’s nine children emigrated to America.

Peder Larsen’s schooling, according to his daughter-in-law, consisted of about 11 weeks of instruction received from house to house. As a youngster, Peder moved to Nordland, the “frontier” section of Norway to which many people of the more southern areas such as Tynset, Stor-Elvedalen, Opdal, and Gudbrandsdalen emigrated. If he spend 25 years in Nordland, as indicated on his gravestone at the Canoe Hauge Church, then he was only 11 years of age when he moved north to Nordland. He is reported to have spent 19 winters as a fisherman in the Lofoten area of Nordland. For breakfast, as a fisherman, he received only “hard tack” and a small glass of cognac. The fishermen worked most of the day lifting nets before they returned home and were fed. The climate in this far-north area (69 degrees north and well into the Artic Circle) of Norway is rigorous, with freezes regularly occurring in August. In relation to the Artic Circle, the location of Bardo is comparable to the northern tip of Alaska.

On September 21, 1851, Peder married Ane Estensdatter Saetermo, daughter of Esten and Beret Saetermo, at Bardo, Nordland (Troms Province), Norway. The ceremony was performed at the Bardo Church, “Ibestado Prastegeld.” Ane was 23 years old (born October 29, 1828). Her father, Esten Tollefson (17196-1859) is also of Tynset stock. Some of his mother’s relatives still live on the Kalbaekken place in Tynset.

In the spring of 1852, Peder and Ane sailed for America. They were the first from their valley near Bardo to emigrate to America. Ten weeks later they docked on the St. Lawrence River in Canada, probably at Quebec. They remained in Canada the rest of that summer and the following winter. Peder found work as an “engineer” in a saw mill. Ane worked at a restaurant during the winter. They continued on to Decorah, Iowa, in the spring.

It was on the trip from Norway to Canada that Peder Larsen decided to change his name to Haugen. He was advised to do so by they ship’s captain who said there were too many Larsens in America and that his indentity would always be “mixed up” if he retained that name. Haugen is a common farm name (gaardsnavn) in Norway. Peder was a follower of the preachings of Hand Nielsen Hauge, a preacher in Nordland. Followers of Hauge were known as “Haugianere.”

Peder and Ane settled in Section 23 in Canoe Township, Winneshiek County, Iowa in 1853. His reason for settling here was that there was plenty of running water, springs and a creek. His first 80 acres were purchased from one Old Benson for $1.25 per acre. At that time there were several Quaker families living in the adjacent Springwater area. Many Norwegian emigrants settled to the north and the northeast of the Haugen place.

Hello again. I am writing from work, so it is in a hurry. I am a little confused.
Was Peder Larsen Haugen at first in Amerika in 1850, then return to Norway to marry, and returned to America with his wife. It will to much of a coincidens if there were to men with the same name in Decorah area from Bardu. Or is the book a little wrong, - so all this happened in 1852 and not in 1850?

Many greetings from Bodil in the north of Norway (but we still have sun - but in a week it is gone for 2 months) :?

Hei Bodil,
I would suspect you will need to check the Church Books for Peder leaving Norway in 1850 and for Peder and Anne leaving Norway in 1852. I do not see that the books are online yet from Bardu?

Yes Bardu Historielag has done that - or...... one of the members has, but he is passed away now. But.... he said that Peder Larsen Haugen emigrated in 1850 and settled down at Decorah. So -- In 1852 Peder Larsen and Anne Estensdatter emigrated - and these two are no doubt "our people", but the first Peder? .... I think it may be correct that Peder Larsen took a trip in 1850 and then returned, for later to come back with his bride. It was not unusual, and others did that in the years that followed.
So Peder Larsen Haugen in 1850 and Peder Larsen (later Haugen) from 1852 can be the same man in my opinion. How dit Peder Larsen meet Anne - he must have worked in Bardu when he met her, and he took the name Haugen - probably from the farm that he stayed last at - and the census of 1845 shows a Peder Larsen Haugen, shoemaker at Haugen farm. But I will research as much as I can - and I am so grateful to you. Perhaps Peders descendants can give me informations about this.
This is very interesting, and if I do not find out more, Bardu Historielag will in our article take this as an "open" question, and simply say that we are not certain.

Hello again
Peder Larsen Haugen in the 1845 census and Peder Larsen (later Haugen) have to be the same man - they are both borned in 1815 - one source says 1816 for one of them but of course the census are often a little incorrect. Then it remains to know if the correct year was 1852 and not 1850 for the settling down in Decorah - perhaps some of the descendants can give informations about that.
Good night from Bodil

Past and Present of Winneshiek County, Iowa
by Edwin C. Bailey. 2 vols. Chicago: S. J. Clarke Pub. Co., 1913.

pp314-315

O. A. P. HAUGEN
In many respects the life of O. A. P. Haugen has been quietly and uneventfully passed, inasmuch as he has always made his home in Canoe township and has followed farming as a source of livelihood. Those who wish to master well the lessons of life, however, may find much that is worthy of emulation in his record, for he has ever been industrious and energetic and has believed in performing to the best of his ability whatever he has undertaken. He has made the Canoe Valley Stock Farm, of which he is the owner, one of the excellent properties of the district in which it is located.
It was in Canoe township, on the 26th of January, 1867, that his birth occurred, his parents being Peter L. and Anna (Sattermoe) Haugen, both of whom were natives of Norway, the former born February 2, 1816, and the latter on 29th of October, 1828. They were married in their native land and in 1853 sailed for America, settling first in Canada, where they remained for one year, the father being employed in a sawmill. He afterward went to Wisconsin and on coming to Winneshiek county, Iowa, took up a claim in Canoe township. To this place he brought his wife in the fall of 1854, and with characteristic energy began the cultivation of the farm upon which they spent their remaining days. The father passed away September 16, 1891, while the mother's death occurred on the 20th of December, 1906. Peter L. Haugen always followed farming in Winneshiek county, and while his claim was wild and undeveloped when it came into his possession he left it a splendidly equipped farm, displaying all the modern improvements. The boundaries, too, of the place had been extended until the eighty acres had been increased to two hundred and seventy. Great changes in the environment and in the mode and habits of living had occurred. Deer were still numerous in this section at an early date and there was fine trout fishing. The Indians also were numerous, not yet having left for reservations farther westward. In fact, all the evidences of pioneer life were here to be seen and the family shared in all of the hardships and privations incident to the establishment of a home on the frontier, but as the years passed time and man wrought many changes and the Haugen family shared in the general prosperity. In politics the father was a stanch republican and held some township offices. He belonged to the Norwegian Lutheran church and was the founder of the Haugen Evangelical church of Canoe township. Unto him and his wife were born three sons and a daughter who died in infancy, while the two surviving children of the family were born in Canoe township the elder being Bertha L., now the widow of H. L. Hanson and still a resident of Canoe township.
The younger, O. A. P. Haugen, has always remained in Canoe township and has resided on his present farm since 1893, having an excellent tract of land of two hundred and sixty acres on sections 22 and 23, 26 and 27. He calls his place the Canoe Valley Stock Farm and thereon he raises a high grade of stock for the Chicago market. He also buys stock which he ships to Chicago, shipping fifteen carloads in the fall of 1912. His business is carefully managed and his enterprise and laudable ambition are the salient features in his growing success. Aside from his farming and stock-raising interests, he is a director of the Ice Cave Creamery Company, of Decorah.
In 1889 Mr. Haugen was united in marriage to Miss Karen O. Talhaug, who was born in Canoe township, April 3, 1871, a daughter of Ole and Johanna Talhaug, who were natives of Norway but became residents of Winneshiek county during the period of the Civil war. Mr. Talhaug continued a resident of Canoe township until his death, and his widow now resides with her daughter, Mrs. Haugen. The latter by her marriage has become the mother of fourteen children, and with the exception of Oscar, who was the eleventh in order of birth and who died at the age of five weeks, all are still living. These are Peter O., Julia, Olga, Emil, Carl, Edwin, Harry, Albert, Alvin, Bessie, Otto Arnold, Florence and an infant.
Mr. Haugen votes with the republican party and is one of the trustees and active members of the Evangelical Lutheran church of Canoe township. His influence is always on the side of right, justice, truth and progress, and the enterprise and industry which he has displayed in his business affairs have made him one of the substantial residents of the county.

HANS L. HANSON

The record of many of Winneshiek county's worthy citizens reflected credit not only upon the state but also upon their native land of Norway. Such was the life history of Hans L. Hanson, who was born in the land of the midnight sun December 7, 1867, and passed away on his farm in Canoe township, April 26, 1907. His parents were Hans and Anna (Olson) Hanson, who in the year 1871 came to the United States, making their way direct to Winneshiek county. They settled first in Hesper township and afterward removed to Canoe township. The father was not long permitted to enjoy his new home, passing away in the year in which he arrived in the new world. The mother, however, survived until 1911. In their family were three children: Andrew and Hans, both of whom are residents of Canoe township; and Christine, the deceased wife of Jacob Budahl.
Hans L, Hanson spent his entire life in Canoe township from the age of four years, having been reared on the old homestead, while soon after his marriage he took up his abode on the farm which is still owned by his widow, which comprises one hundred and sixty-three acres of land on section 23 and is known as the Canoe Dairy Farm, being devoted to the live stock and dairy business, making a specialty of Holstein cattle. Mr. Hanson developed the farm according to modern methods and carefully and systematically tilled the soil, bringing the land under a good state of cultivation, while his stock-raising and dairy interests constituted also a most important feature of the place.
On the 2d of June, 1892, Mr. Hanson was married to Miss Bertha L. Haugen, who was born December 6, 1858, on the farm which is still her home, her parents being Peter L. and Anna Haugen, who settled upon this place in 1854, being among the pioneer residents of this section of the state. Mr. and Mrs. Hanson became the parents of five children, Anna, Christina, Amanda, Bennie and Peter, all of whom were born upon the farm which the family still occupies.
In his political views Mr. Hanson was a republican, always voting for the men and measures of the party, yet never seeking nor desiring office for himself. He held membership in the Evangelical Lutheran church and his was a well spent life, whereby he gained the respect, confidence and good-will of his fellowmen.
His death, which occurred April 26, 1907, when he was in the fortieth year of his age, was deeply regretted by all who knew him. In his passing the community lost a loyal citizen, his associates a faithful friend, and his family a devoted husband and father.

The story of Peder Larsen Haugen from Bardu is of course correct as you write it, and so it will be written by Bardu Historielag. Perhaps was he in USA in 1850, but we do not know. I will try to find the original church book from 1850, but if I do not find it, his story will be according to the informations you have given us.
So grateful. Thanks.
