Like an idiot, I have not backed up one of my family files for several
months. Now I can not open the file. When I try, it says "Family Tree
Maker executable has encountered an error and has to close". I can see
the file on my list of files but just can't open it. Any suggestions
or do I just go back to the old, old backup file. Help....

Sounds more like the program, not your data files. Copy the whole
directory to a cd, that wil get your data off, then reinstall the
program exactly where it is, right over the top of the existing
program. If that works it may fix the problem. If you have another pc
that would work better.

Perhaps someone still has access to those tools at the current owner's

file. FTM makes automatic backup files, with the tag .fbk, every time you
shut it down (the main file is .ftw). I would copy the fbk file into another
directory or onto a floppy, just to be safe, and then reinstall the
programme. Then try and open your file. If it doesn't work, try opening the
fbk file.

If it's the exe file, it sounds like the programme rather than the family
file. FTM makes automatic backup files, with the tag .fbk, every time you
