Translating my genealogy CD-ROM
Hi:
I hope this will be appropriate for the newsgroup...
I published recently the French version of my database on a CD-ROM
and I am now preparing the English version. I made a first draft
that can be viewed from
http://www.francogene.com/genealogy/gfna.php (CD-ROM overall)
http://www.francogene.com/gfna/ (database overall,
and later will be my web site presentation)
I would like to get your feedback to improve the quality of my
English. I know my style is poor and my grammar needs improvement,
but I don't know how to do that.
Also, the CD-ROM is working like a web site. Actually, it is the same
software I use to generate the content (with some switches to select
the years, the language and the file names). I would like to have it
autorunning. I read software that I only had to have some autorun
file with start index.htm in it. I did so with no result. I read
later that I have to install some start.exe program. Isn't it
possible to do that with a batch file ?

Before Win XP, you can make the CD autorun with a simple batch file.
For Win XP, you need a bit more. I ended up using a freeware program
that produces and exe file that does it for you. There were several
options, but I wanted only the most basic... just to start the CD as
you'd start on a web page, using the users web browser.
The program was called Menubox. Here's a web page:
http://www.cloanto.com/menubox/
If I remember correctly, for the more advanced features, you need a
registered version of the program, with a license fee.

then it won't autorun on a Win 98 computer.
Using the program I mentioned, however, seems to work on both systems.
The files you need to actually put on the computer are quite small...
I can email you the ones I used on mine, if you'd like to look at

First of all, I tested it with my own computer (windows 98SE) to find
my file was not working anyway. It worked with another CD-ROM but not
mine. But I found 2 solutions.
I tried that autorun.inf:
[autorun]
OPEN=start index.htm
Not working.
So, I put the start command in a batch file and it was working.
[autorun]
OPEN=start2.bat
And finally, I found. This is THE solution:
[autorun]
OPEN=start.exe index.htm
Start must have the .exe to work !!! And start is a part of Windows
98 and Windows XP. So, no need for any external software. Just type
the full name of the program
Now back to that translation...

I have been creating technical CD's for our company's field techs to
enable them to carry several hundred manuals with out the penalty of low
gas mileage from the added weight. This method has worked flawlessly
for me with out a single failure on any O/S it has been used on. Go to
http://www.whirlywiryweb.com/q%2Fshellexe.asp
for the program and full, easy to follow instructions. With it, you
copy the following files to the root of the CD and it works.
[autorun]
open = shellexe.exe (Start.PDF) (ReadMe.txt)
icon = EGP Tech Resources.ico
(Substitute your files for the ones in the parentheses)
You have the option of listing different files to open in order of
importance if the end user doesn't have the appropriate program on their
computer. My CD's rely on the user having Adobe reader installed. If
they don't have Adobe then it opens the ReadMe.txt file which explains
that the need to load Adobe Reader. It is a very simple and flexible
way to make auto run CD's. Oh yeah, did I mention that it's free?
Re: Translating my genealogy CD-ROM
I found and tested a solution. The autorun.inf file can be:
[autorun]
OPEN=start.exe index.htm
ShellExecute=index.htm
I tested that in Windows 98SE and Windows XP Pro, so it should
work in any Windows environment.

[autorun]
open = shellexe.exe (Start.PDF) (ReadMe.txt)
icon = Your Icon.ico
(Substitute your files for the ones in the parentheses)
You have the option of listing different files to open in order of
