Research log

Legg inn av Sherry » 13 jan 2006 16:28:13

There are so many websites to search now and information is always coming
and going. I find hits, print out the info and then when I go to file
it, realize that I already have been to that site and printed out that
information previously.

Have any of you out there devised a good research log to keep track of
online searches or have any suggestions on how to keep track of the
searches?

This would be a great function in Excel. I've tried to create a couple
of logs but haven't been really happy with any of them.

Ideas??? Please post them to the list, not to my email address I use for
the list (it's just a spam catcher), as I'm sure there are lots of other
people who would find some of these ideas helpful!

Thanks,
Sherry

Unfortunately, all such logs require the user to USE IT as reference
before the fact. When one is in hot-pursuit of a new reference, one is
unlikely to stop long enough to pull up a spreadsheet, or open a
notebook, and CHECK.

I imagine there are a number of people that organized, but while I do
keep a log, I tend NOT to look there first.

I've been just copying the URL and results into the individual NOTES as
I go.

I have been wanting something similar:

1, A web search based on a Gedcom file
2, Searches through names and through basic websearhes (family.org,
World Connect etc)
3, Stores results and web page references
4, regularly goes back to the same sites and looks for anything new to
report.

There are a few search engines/programs out there that will do some of
the above but not all.

So I did start to write one - so far just got a basic inidividual
search based on Gedcom - The rest does not work- no saving, no running
through gedcom automatically, no looking for anything new.

Working full time leave very little spare for my hobbies.

In the meantime I save the websites on my system for printing later on
and adding to my source file, when I'm in the filing mood - (not often).
