Available Transcription Software!!

Legg inn av Gjest » 07 jan 2006 19:58:02

Hi All:

(Stephen - I looked at your `windbm.zip`
- It's an index recording app. only and not suitable for full record
transcription as far as I could tell. Thanks for sending it for me to look
at. Many thanks for getting in touch with Peter for me also!!!)

Re:
: Hello Stephen,
:
: I wrote SpeedREG in the early days of the FReeXXX projects, using
: my professional knowledge of DOS based system development.
: Personal problems have however plagued me in recent years with
: the result that I no longer do system development of any kind.
:
: If you, or anyone you know, wishes to develop a Windows based
: successor to SpeedREG then you have my blessing.
:
: Kind regards,
:
: Peter Cox

The original reason I was on this list asking if anyone knew of newer
transcription software than SpeedReg is that I did not wish to continue
development of [http://jrose.dynip.com/gsrc/GSRCTranscriber/default.asp]
until I checked out the competition. There is none, as far as my research
tells me.

My (under development) software is intended to be generic. It's NOT for
recording indexes but only real records which contain as complete
information as was originally recorded.

Example:
For a marriage the record would have a; Groom, Bride, Groom's Father,
Groom's Mother, Bride's Father, Bride's Mother, a few Witnesses, a Minister
or Justice of the Peace, and possibly af few other odd folks not normally
found in this type of record. The minimum requirement for a marriage record
is a Groom and a Bride. The others are optional.

Basically the software's features are (but not limited to):

1. Draw from a set of original (or near original) document images available
from an online (stored in a server's) catalogue and transcribe from these so
you don't have to run around to libraries and record offices. Nor do you
need to buy/rent a fiche/film viewer if you wish to transcribe at home.

2. Draw from original documents in your personal archives. Ideally the
original (or near original) documents are scanned by you and sent along with
the record(s) to the server. These images would become the `Source of
Authority` for your transcribed database record. Just like the 1901 UK
Census web database provides. (Image sizing and format will apply.)

3. Primary target for the transcribed records is the G.S.R.C. online
database. [http://jrose.dynip.com/gsrc/default.asp] but I will be adding
export features to prepare (exporting) the records for sending to other
targets. (i.e. FreeBMD, FreeCEN, etc.)

{A note about the G.S.R.C. online database. Unlike many others it is NOT
restricted to Parish records or Census records. It has all of these and
more. The object of the project is to record all possible sources of records
in one database so that our ancestors can be found with one-stop-shopping!
For example: Click on this link
[http://jrose.dynip.com/gsrc/database/Ind_Detail.asp?Ind_ID=3135229] and go
to the bottom of the page - The first one in the list at the bottom is a
match to the person in the detail section above the list.}

4. Naturally you will be able to print out the results of your
transcription(s). I would think most folks would not as one bundle (batch)
of records could be in the thousands thus using LOTS of paper!

5. Initially I will be developing data entry forms for; 1. Marriages, 2.
Baptisms/Births, and 3. Deaths/Burials. These will be followed with entry
forms for; Directories like Pigot's, Tithes, Posse Comitatus, Wills,
Warrants, Trade Directories, possibly Censuses, and others (if so required
by you the users.)

I'm testing the software from a large image set of Phillimore's - Marriages
(Cornwall & Derbyshire) at the moment.

I could use help with:

Anyone with access to any Phillimore's on CD. I think these can be converted
from PDF? to other image formats for use with my software but I do not have
any Phillimore CDs and would need one to test this out. Can you help me? If
so email me at: gsrc@shaw.ca

Anyone with access to film/fiche of "original parish registers" and a
"fiche/film scanner". I could use a test sample of images covering at least
one UK parish.

Anyone with computer/database/software development skills who can help beta
test the new software. You should understand the development cycle of new
software if you wish to assist me. Again email me at: gsrc@shaw.ca

I would also like to discuss copyright issues with anyone who has dealt with
this in the past. It will apply to housing document images on my server and
dispencing these with `no copy`, `no save`, `no print` and where the images
will only be available to this software (online). Nothing is stored on the
user's computer. I have question like: Who owns the copyright of the
original parish records? Would it be the PRO, CRO, LDS, all these, etc.? Is
Phillimores still under copyright? If so by who? Etc, Etc., Etc......

For example: Can I use copyrighted document images if I have the copyright
holder's premission? It may not be hard to get their permission if I offer
them the results of the database transcriptions for their use.

I'll looking forward to your replies;

Joe Rose

Step number one, in that case would be to *ask* the other targets what their
view of your intention is, rather than stating an intention to export data
to them.

The FreeUKGEN projects are transcriptions of particular data sources.

One of the biggest problems that they face is well-meaning people who
imagine that we *must* want their data, even where that data is compromised
by not being a transcription of the original source.

As such, we discourage the provision of facilities within 3rd party code
(other than software written specifically for the projects in liason with
our technical people) to produce exports in our file formats.
