SANNER, SANDER, or SANDERENGEN?

Legg inn av gj01576 » 04 jan 2006 08:04:21

Could someone help me, please?

I am working my way through the passenger list for 1872 Høvding (Oslo to Napier, New Zealand).

I have Engebret ENGEBRETSEN SANNER on the emigrants list as follows:

http://digitalarkivet.uib.no/cgi-win/we ... 3&spraak=e.
25143 Oslo 400A 1872 30 Engebret ENGEBRETSEN SANNER m G Arb. - 36 S. Odalen New Zealand 1323 Norsk œ 32 Høvding

I think this is the same person in the 1865 census at Sanderengen (farm), Sander (School distr.), Strøm, Søndre Odalen, Hedmark, Norway:

http://digitalarkivet.uib.no/cgi-win/we ... 6&spraak=e.
3656 18 1 Engebret ENGEBRETS. Husfader Gaardbruger og Selvejer g 27 m Søndre Odalen Prgj.

Does this mean that he should have been recorded as 'Engebret ENGEBRETSEN SANDER' instead of 'Engebret ENGEBRETSEN SANNER'? Or should he have been named after the farm - ie, 'Engebret ENGEBRETSEN SANDERENGEN'?

Hi Pip,

As far as I know there is no formal correct way to register his name so you will have to choose. It is very common that we find names spelled differently in parish and emigration records and farm names are often used as a part of a person's name.

Thanks, Vidar.

He dropped the last name and anglicised his name to ENGELBRETSEN or ENGLEBRETSEN just to keep everyone confused!

Pip.
