FTM 2006 vs. TMG v.6 - need advice please
I have been doing genealogy research for awhile. I have roughly 2000 names.
Several years ago, I started inputting my data using an old version of
FTM--but I did not like the way it did not handle citations. So, I switched
to The Master Genealogist (TMG). TMG handled citations well, but its
interface was clunky and I would get system error messages, which didn't
give me a lot of confidence. Then, I had to migrate to a new PC, and during
the migration, some of the files, when I tried to load them in TMG were
corrupted and it couldn't find some of them.
I have not done much with my genealogy research for 3-4 years now, due to
other comittments. However, now I'm wanting to continue with it again. I
downloaded the TMG v6 free trial software, but the interface seems awful
(worse than the previous version). There doesn't seem to be anything
intuitive about it. I could not find a free trial FTM 2006 download but I
noticed that it now has citation capabilities, and I'm giving it a second
look.
I'm very interested in any feedback regarding one vs. the other. For those
who have FTM 2006:
- Does it let you export to a lot of different formats and
would it be easy to migrate new PC?
- Can you add multiple sources/citations for each data element
(.e.g., If you list someone's birthdate and you can confirm it
with 3 sources, can you list all three sources there?)
- Also, can you assign add images for a source (e.g., a scanned
TIF of a marriage record)?
- Is there a space where you can write freestyle (e.g., stories or
anecdotes) and add photos?
- Also, what is the difference between FTM 2006 Standard and
the Deluxe version?
- Are there any limitations (other than disk space) on the number
of names and records that you can store?
Thanks!

Charlie,
Can you please tell me why you picked Legacy over FTM? FTM is the only
program I have ever used so I don't know what other programs offer.
Thank You

Thanks. I've been looking at Legacy and Roots Magic for the last hour or so.
For some reason, I like Legacy a little more. I'm not sure why. It may be
the layout.
In using the demo, some of the reporting capabilities are inactive. Do you
know if you can publish this to a book format?
Thanks,
Robin

Family Tree Maker is produced only for Windows operating systems.
Operation on Windows emulators and "Lite" operating systems is not
tested or supported.
Family Tree Maker versions 2006, 2005, 11 & 10 have been designed for
and tested in Windows 98, ME and XP Home Edition. These are the
officially supported operating systems for those program versions.
However, we know many customers who successfully use Family Tree Maker
in Windows NT, 2000, and XP Professional.
FTM: What are the program limitations of Family Tree Maker?
Number of individuals per file approximately 250,000 *
Number marriages per individual 99
Number of children per marriage 99
Number of objects per Scrapbook 2,000 **
Number of Family Books per file 31 << obviously make a new copy of the
file and make 31 more if you need to
Number of Book Items (Saved Views) per file 512
Size of each note section FTM 10-2005: about 8 pages
FTM 2006: about 250 pages
Number of items per box on a tree 50
Number of generations allowed in an Outline Descendant Tree 250
Number of generations allowed in graphical trees (Ancestor, Descendant,
Hourglass and All-in-One) 99
Number of generations allowed in genealogy reports 99
Number of generations Pedigree View can display 7 << sceen size
* Number of individuals per file is an approximation; the actual number
varies. File capacity is determined by several factors, including data
entry method, amount and type of information entered for each individual.
** Number of objects per scrapbook is the programmed limit. For optimal
performance, we recommend careful selection of scrapbook items to limit
file size.

excellent program and deserves consideration. People differ but I
don't care for Faulty Tree Miscue (FTM, whatever).
If you have a GED import it; if you don't add no more than 50 or so
names and give both programs a workout - both navigation and reports.
Then decide for yourself which program suits you.

To compliment what Charlie said, IMO you would be doing yourself a
disservice if you did not try both RootsMagic and Legacy. I have tried
most genealogy programs and settled on those two. Both programs are
reasonably priced and both have excellent user groups. TMG is an
excellent program and deserves consideration. People differ but I
don't care for Faulty Tree Miscue (FTM, whatever).
If you have a GED import it; if you don't add no more than 50 or so
names and give both programs a workout - both navigation and reports.
Then decide for yourself which program suits you.

- Are there any limitations (other than disk space) on the number
of names and records that you can store?

The one thing I would add to this mix is that I have a friend that
uses FTM and when she had some database problems we contacted FTM and
they said get a new version. We got the new version and they said
reenter the people, because you also transferred the problems...no
duh! When I called TMG, yes they have LIVE people that can help, they
told me how to to transfer the info to TMG, without the errors. It
worked fine and all the people were still in there. Some details were
missing but all the 2500 people were still there. I use TMG but have
access to other programs as well. I then made a gedcom and transferred
te data back to FTM and all is now fine. Long story short...tech
support is another thing to consider. FTM's is BAD, TMG's is
EXCELLENT!

Re: FTM 2006 vs. TMG v.6 - need advice please
Hi,
Just thought I would put my "two bobs" worth in this thread.
I use five genealogy programs. My master is FTM but I wish I could access
the photo file but it is in data format so you have no access to a hands on
file as with Legacy. I use Legacy for the one page pedigree tree but FTM has
now got the same report but not quite as good.
I use Brothers Keeper for a great A4 report where you can show five
generations all the on same page and people can see immediately, in a brief
format, all their cousins, uncles and aunts and grandparents without turning
any pages. It can be framed nicely and the grandkids love as it is updated
every time a new baby is born.
I use Heredes for a brilliant tree report which follows the male and female
lines of a family back as far as it will go and Heredes also has a nice
little feature where you can show a report with connecting lines showing
family on a horizontal format.
I use Family Historian for the descendant outline and ancestor outline which
gives you options to display all the information in a format people seem to
be able to understand better.
I use the gedcom feature to transfer information to each program and this
works well from FTM. I have purchased Adobe Acrobat to be able to make
enormous files of my FTM photos so as to be able to scroll them through as a
slide show on special family days. It seems to me that the PDF files that
FTM generates open quite well this way but a bit of messing about to set up.
But with the Adobe you can join all the files together and it makes for
interesting viewing as you can also see the captions etc from the person's
scrapbook.
All these programs and not one of them have a "pop up" that will tell me
each morning who has a birthday or anniversary. That is on my wish list. Of
course there are other programs to do this but I am not typing in another
set of names to another thing without using gedcom.
Another thing on my wish list is a gedcom that would transfer my photos from
FTM and then I would be set!!!!

Thanks everyone! I've been playing with Legacy, Roots Magic and Gen Box. I'm
probably going to get Roots Magic along with the Personal Historian add-on.
It just feels more intuitive. Legacy does also but from the reviews and from
what I've seen, it looks like Roots Magic has citation/referencing
capabilities that are like TMG's. I really wanted to stay with TMG but the
interface is just too much of a hassle, and it seems that when you're not
researching, the other #1 task is typing the data in, and I wanted to make
that task as painless as possible.
I managed to gather up my old TMG files (the non-corrupted ones) and I used
the trial version of TMG to open the project and convert my entire database
to one giant GEDCOM file. I then imported the file into the trial version of
Roots Magic, and it went really fast--and the data looks fairly clean. So,
it will probably be Roots Magic for me.
Thanks for all the great feedback.

Thanks!
