Hi,I've been searching the digitalarkivet every way i can think of and
can't find a convincing match for Carl Carlson of renville minnesota in
1900 birthdate listed as may 1849 born Norway parents born Norway to
USA in 1887.
Other clues, on his childrens' birth registrations he gave his name
as:-
Charles Frank Carlson.
Charles Satland? Carlson
carl carlson
charles carlson.
Were people from Finland entered in the USA census as Norwegian?
Any ideas?
David.

Nope.
There are 6 Carl Carlson's in Renville county, MN in the 1900 US
Federal Census. I take it that you are refering to Carl F Carlson
of Emmet, Renville, MN (1900 US Federal Census, MN, Renville,
Emmet Township, Enumeration District 129, Sheet 3B, line 56).
According to the census he immigrated to the US in 1887, and had been
in America for 13 years in 1900, has been married for 11 years, ie since
1889 or so, and had 6 kids still living by 1900 - among them two pairs
of twins.
Best bet is to look for a Karl Satland Karlsen from Norway at
Castle Garden in 1887. There are tons of Karl Karlsens. But that
middle name there might be a farm name that could lead you to
something. Where do you see the Charles Satland Carlson name ?
In 1900 census he is listed as "Na" (Naturalized). Checked if there
are naturalization papers at the Renville courthouse ?
Checked for marriage certificate in 1889 ?

Stein

Re: Norwegian Emigrant to Minnesota
Hi,
i have an image of that census page but didn't realise there was an f
under that black line.Thought it was enumerator scribble, all the heads
of household seem to have something there.
We got the Satland by telephone from the Renville recorder it was on a
birth record. It may not be exactly satland but that was their best
guess.A Norwegian correspondent tells me it could be sortland or
sorteland.
They couldn't find a marriage record in Renville. Are there indexes?
I'm doing most of this on the net as i am in the UK.I've spent days in
the Norwegian archives but none of the people i find have enough points
to qualify.

Well, that's the way ancestry.com transscribed it, anyways.
Sure.
I would expect so, but not necessarily online. Have you checked the
rootsweb Renville, MN page ?

The relevant info is that he probably was named {KC}arl in Norway, was
born in 1849, emigrated in 1887 - ie about 38 years old, and went to
America.
The emigration protocal records at digitalarkivet that covers 1887
would be:
1) Emigranter over Fredrikstad 1883-1890
only 9 emigrants for 1887 - none plausible
2) Emigranter fra Oslo 1867-1930
0 emigrants in 1887 (name was Kristiania then, see under)
3) Emigranter over Kristiania 1871-1930
15116 emigrants in 1887,
732 have first names containing "arl"
102 with age starting with "3"
5 with age 39
6 with age 38
6 with age 37
none of the last 17 any obvious matches
4) Emigranter fra Larvik 1887-1930
only 22 emigrants in 1887 - none plausible
5) Emigranter fra Kristiansand 1873-1930
2966 emigrants in 1887
63 with first names containing "arl"
2 born in 1848
3 born in 1849
2 born in 1850
6) Emigranter fra Stavanger 1825-1970
1291 emigrants in 1887
24 with first names containing "arl"
(A lot of records lacks birth date and age)
7) Emigranter fra Bergen 1874-1930
1855 emigrants in 1887
31 with first names containing "arl"
1 born 1849 - not plausible
Emigranter over Ålesund 1878-1930
148 emigrants in 1887
7 with first name containing "arl" - none plausible
9) Emigranter fra Kristiansund 1882-1930
527 emigrants in 1887
12 with first name containing "arl" - none plausible
A) Emigranter fra Trondheim 1867-1930
4041 emigrants in 1887
91 with first name containing "arl"
16 with age starting with 3
two swedes of reasonable age - bound for Wilmar, MN
B) Utvandret fra Målselv og Bardu 1867-1930
10 emigrants with date containing 1887.
None plausible.
Right. I expect you will have to spend more time in the US archives to
find enough to link it back to Norway.
Good luck!
