General search in Legacy 6.0

Legg inn av lars » 25. oktober 2005 kl. 15.43

I'm running Legacy 6.0 (basic version), and can't figure out how to do a
general search throughout a given family database file. For example, I
wanted to find the word 'Litchfield' (a place name) anywhere in the data.

As best I can tell, you can only search specific fields, which seems
pretty limiting. I don't see that the deluxe (pay) version does any
more, according to the features list.

I used to be able to do a general search in Reunion when I was using it
on the Mac - surely there must be a way to do so in Legacy!

Any suggestions?

Afraid not. Legacy's underlying database is MS Access, an SQL database.
Any searches must be column specific. The program could search every
column individually for you (in the background), but that could get
quite ugly and time consuming. There are hundreds of columns.

Any suggestions?

Export your data to a GEDCOM and open it in a text editor. Then search
the GEDCOM for the text you are looking for.

If it is place names that you are searching you can call up any individuals
information and click on the down arrow next to any of the placename fields.
This will bring up a list of all place names in the record. Then if you
select one of the place names you can click on list and see what individuals
use that place name. Also a convenient way to globally change a place name.

However, if the name is in notes the only way I have been able to find such
a thing is to made a GEDCOM and use a word processor to find the word.
