Legg inn av dn01013 » 23 okt 2005 19:05:05

G'day all!

Associated with the birthplace in the Digitalarkivet , I sometimes see the
Norge word

Præstegjeld

Like Skedsmo Præstegjeld, or Nittedalen Præstegjeld

What does this word Præstegjeld mean in English?

"Priest district" would be a literal translation. Some translate it
as "parish" in English. It was a local administrative church district
consisting of one or more congregations/church buildings (sokn).

Clerical records were kept at the prestegjeld level. Currently there
are 617 prestegjeld/parishes, and 1303 sokn/congregations.

Incidentally - not "Norge word" - Norge is the name of the *country*,
ie the same as "Norway" in English. "Norwegian" is "norsk".

Smil,
Stein

Hei!
Prestegjeld/Præstegjeld is usually defined as a clerical district but it is
essentially a head parish. It may stand alone but may also have other
parishes or annexes under it. For your purpose the term parish is probably
adequate As a general rule a prestegjeld is coterminous with a 'kommune' =
municipality, a basic administrative unit in Norway.
