Data Backup

Legg inn av Mardon » 23. juli 2005 kl. 13.23

I recently had a system crash but was fortunate enough not to lose any
of my data because I had been backing it up regularly. The program
that I use for doing the backups is one that I've not seen discussed
here, so I thought that I'd mention it to the group. And "No" I
have no financial interest in the company. I'm merely a user who was
saved a good deal of grief by this product. It's called "Backup
Magic" by Moon Software (http://www.moonsoftware.com/bmagic.asp).
It's downloadable for US$25.00 and a free 30-Day evaluation copy is
available. I purchased a US$250 external hard drive to store my backup
data and I use Backup Magic to keep the data up to date. This system
will not handle the backup of programs or the system registry but it is
great for data. It literally saved years of work when my system
crashed.

I have recently commenced using XP's Backup function and it is free.

I work with a laptop for work and we have to backup weekly all our offline
folders. I have set it to run Friday morning at 11am - a good time to clean
up my desk for the end of the week. It appears to run in the background but
as soon as it starts I just close everything and do something else. Once it
is finished I just compress the folder and copy it to the network drives we
use for backup. Due to the complexity of our systems we occasionally have
laptop rebuilds or even worse bad software installs over a weekend - the
backups are invaluable.

To start Backup, click Start, point to All Programs, point to Accessories,
point to System Tools, and then click Backup.

Cant see the point of buying stuff that is available for free and works
well. You can choose to backup your whole machine or just selected folders
etc.

Some XP home edition users will not have the backup program installed
as a default and won't find it there. (I didn't).
You can follow the directions at:

to install the backup program if you don't find it.
