Hi all
I run into these situations from the 1900 census where I find an
interesting entry and would like to know exactly where it is located
geographically. Perhaps there is a "kart" search in the census
somewhere, but I don't see it. Just as an example, I now have (Herred)
1750 Vigten in Nord-Trøndelag. Multimap, Mapquest, and norge.no all
fail to find it. Perhaps it has disappeared or been merged between 1900
and today, but I'm hoping to be steered to a way of looking such things
up myself so I don't have to bug people for every one of these.

Probably the spelling has changed. Good resource for finding
municipalities in Norway:
http://home.eunet.no/~jeri/maps.shtml
Click on "Nord Trøndlag".
The web page also has a list of old names for municipalities, here
http://home.eunet.no/~jeri/kommuner.shtml
1750 Vigten was the municipal name from 1875 until 1910, from 1911
the municipality has been called Vikna.
I've been there, and my company has a local office there. Nice
place, nice people.

<Grin> - it certainly is common in genealogy to leap to conclusions,
and then discover that the place where you land is not quite as firm
as it looked before the leap. But in this particular case you would
have landed on terra firma
You are welcome. Happy hunting for ancestors !
