Legacy & Pdf

Legg inn av Helen Castle » 1. april 2005 kl. 14.58

I remember someone making a point about later versions of Adobe and Legacy
not quite working together.

I am trying to use Adobe 7 to open my reports created by Legacy some time
ago and they are all blank - I know when I created them they weren't.

Anyone remember what the hint was to fix it.

Helen,

Go to our website at http://www.legacyfamilytree.com/help.asp >
Solutions by Error Description and under the section on PDF files,
you'll find the fix for this problem.

Another option is to go back to Acrobat Reader v5 or v6.

My thanks to you for that also. I was looking all over the place for 6.0
yesterday because my installed 5.x hasn't handled an occasisonal
downloaded PDF. The sites that say 6.0 had all been modified to 7.0, so in
resignation I finally downloaded what supposedly was a full install of 7.0
as opposed to a web install. It then wanted to access the web when I
started the install so I aborted the process.

But I now have 6.0! Thanks! :-)

Now the funny thing is that I installed V7 and tried to open several .pdfs -
I then viewed a .pdf via Legacy which fired up V4 (must have not been
overwritten by V7) and then after that I could view via V7

Thanks for the help

Version 7 of Adobe fixes many of the problems version 6 has - the main
one being the insufferable amount of time it takes six to load.

This link will get you to the ADOBE site for the full download.

I never liked v6 and stuck with v5. v7 did run faster, but ended up
going back to v5 again when v7 had problems reading the pdfs created in
Legacy (it was nothing Legacy changed!)

Personally, I don't see any need to go to v7. v5 works just fine for
me.

I had to have V7 as some important documents came in a later version than I
had and V7 was the one that I got from Adobe

Maybe will try an earlier version if needed - Legacy still fires up V4 and
the problem with V7 has "gone away" as computer problems often do when you
spend hours trying to work it out, you then pose a question to the newsgroup
and then try one more time.

A curse on Adobe 7.0! &$@# !! I installed it yesterday because 6.0
really is a slow clunker and it blew up my browser. After one whole lot of
hassle because of what 7.0 did to my system, my browser is now back to
using Adobe 5.0 and that's what I get when I click on a PDF from my
browser. I also have 6.0 available for the rare PDF that 5.0 can't handle.
Those simply get downloaded to my desktop and I manually open them with 6.0
which is also installed.

Give it another chance to blow up my browser and go through all that time &
hassle to repair the damage again? Uh uh. There's no way of knowing beforehand,
so no thank you! As the old saying goes and applied to Adobe - "Cheat me once,
shame on you. Cheat me twice, shame on me."

The V5.0 reader works for 99.9% of such websites that I encounter and I'm rather
inclined to click on view as HTML anyhow as I see no rationale in switching to a
different interface for the sake of switching to a different interface. What is
somewhat amusing is that I encountered a website the other day that V5 couldn't
handle and is the reason I keep V6 around. However, the site insisted that it
was going to install V7 on my computer and gave me no option for saving the PDF
to my desktop. I easily took a pass on that one and they lost their opportunity
to tell me their message. They were the loser, not I.

Bob,

How do you get two versions of Reader to work on your computer? I've
been using v5 (I hated v6 and got rid if it quicker than I downloaded
and installed it in the first place!) and had to update to v7 to test a
Leagcy created pdf (which v7 doesn't like). They're in different
folders, but when I go to the v5 folder, it opens v7.

I would much prefer not to have v7 on my computer - not sure that I
want to go through the process of installing and uninstalling everytime
I need to check something out with that version!

Never had a pdf file that v5 couldn't handle - I will get the
occasional message that v5 might not support some features in the pdf
I'm opening, but never anything that caused a problem.

Thanks,

Sherry

Both v5 & v6 can coexist and they use the folders C:\Program
Files\Adobe\Acrobat 5.0 & Acrobat 6.0 which they will create during
installation. Which one your browser will use is determined by which one
was the last one installed as the installation process handles that for
you. So remove all traces of 6.0 & 7.x via the Control Panel uninstall just
to have a clean slate. Also look in Program Files and delete any traces of
the 2 folders I just mentioned. Then install 6.0 and have a Destop icon for
it if you wish. At this point your browser will use 6.0. Then install 5.0
and it should replace 6.0 as your browser's default, but 6.0 will still be
available.

I was so steamed at the time I was going thru the process that I may not
recall this exactly, but I believe it was such that if 7.x was on the
system at all, it wouldn't permit the above installation default to take
place. That must be the case, because I would have also had 7.0 on my
system were that to be possible. Therefore, I don't think your stated goal
of having 7.0 also available is possible via normal means.

I had v5 installed then installed v7 and v7 took the defaults. I think
if I installed v7 first and then tried installing v5 it won't let me.
I hate it when a program tries to tell me what to do with my
installation and even more so when it's universal and there's no
support to speak of for us peons!

Think I'll just dump v7 and if I need to reinstall it, I will.

Yes. I believe that's what happened to me with v7 and why I kept v6. Just
guessing that v6 would handle the ones that v5 couldn't, but don't really
know for sure. It's a shame that they didn't give more thought to
backwards compatibilty when they released v7.

It might be possible to deal with the defaults via registry mods and ?,
but it hardly seems worth the trouble and a search failed to turn up a
canned solution of that nature.

Before you give up, try this.

In Windows Explorer locate a pdf file > Right click > select open with >

and select it. In the bottom of the dialog box is a small check box
labled always use the selected program to open this kind of file. Check

That's generally a pretty good tip for anyone who wants particular software
to open a file in Windows Explorer with a double-click, but I don't think it
will be of much help for people who use Firefox, Mozilla, and various
flavors of Netscape as their browser. I wasn't certain about MSIE 6.0 as I
don't use it too often, so here are my results.

This has been a very stable installation of Win2k Pro SP4 on a Pentium
system with 256 memory and gobs of HD. I followed your instructions to the
letter and it's a process that I'm very familiar with. PDF's were opening in
v6.0 after I did that, but somethings didn't seem right, so I re-booted just
to be fair.

After re-boot, I double-clicked on a PDF and set it for v6.0 and it
immediately opened in v6.0. I closed it and double-clicked again and it
opened in v6.0. I left that running and then brought up MSIE 6.0, Googled on
PDF and clicked one there at the bottom of the first page. It came up and it
looked like 6, but it had no Help for me to check. It also hung MSIE at that
point. I closed the open PDF from the first PDF from the taskbar, but MSIE
was still hung. After patiently waiting a bit, I went into Task Mgr with the
intention of killing the task, but before I could it gave the message:
"Could not find Acrobat External Window Handler" and Windows wanted to
report it to Microsoft.
I closed MSIE and repeated the Google and open PDF. It opened in v5.0 as in
the past! Firefox & NS4.79 continue to open in v5.0.

Best of luck.

Does going into Options, Programs, Manage Add ons in IE and removing V7 fix
it.

I notice I have V7 there and as I have had no problems at all with V7 I
didnt want to change it.

Before you give up, try this.
In Windows Explorer locate a pdf file > Right click > select open with
choose program > browse to the version you wish to use as default
and select it. In the bottom of the dialog box is a small check box
labled always use the selected program to open this kind of file. Check
this box and select OK. This should fix the problem.

That's generally a pretty good tip for anyone who wants particular
software
to open a file in Windows Explorer with a double-click, but I don't think
it
will be of much help for people who use Firefox, Mozilla, and various
flavors of Netscape as their browser.

PDF's were opening
in
v6.0 after I did that, but somethings didn't seem right, so I re-booted
just
to be fair.

After re-boot, I double-clicked on a PDF and set it for v6.0 and it
immediately opened in v6.0. I closed it and double-clicked again and it
opened in v6.0. I left that running and then brought up MSIE 6.0, Googled
on
PDF and clicked one there at the bottom of the first page. It came up and
it
looked like 6, but it had no Help for me to check. It also hung MSIE at
that
point. I closed the open PDF from the first PDF from the taskbar, but MSIE
was still hung. After patiently waiting a bit, I went into Task Mgr with
the
intention of killing the task, but before I could it gave the message:
"Could not find Acrobat External Window Handler" and Windows wanted to
report it to Microsoft.
I closed MSIE and repeated the Google and open PDF. It opened in v5.0 as
in
the past! Firefox & NS4.79 continue to open in v5.0.

Best of luck.

Sorry, Helen, but I can't see anything that looks like that in this MSIE
6.0.2800.1106. No "Options" to click for starters and no other tabs lead to
that.

I notice I have V7 there and as I have had no problems at all with V7 I
didnt want to change it.

I haven't have V7 on this system since my goaround with it some weeks ago. Just
5.0 & 6.0 now.

All is working well now

I created the Adobe docs some time ago - up to 5 years ago when using W98 or
W95 I have upgraded my system several times since then. My understanding
of .pdfs is that they should be readable forever if you have the program to
do so.

I used Adobe 7 to try and look at some docs I was considering sending to the
rubbish bin as they were probably stuff I created years ago and dont need
anymore

Once I fired up Legacy and created and viewed a .pdf in Legacy, which
incidentally fired up Adobe V4 not V7, all was fine and V7 now shows the
docs.

Mine is not to reason why

One thing you could do, to improve the handling of these files would be to
increase the size of your Pagefile,
this acts as a buffer to your Ram.

I had said, per above: "This has been a very stable installation of Win2k Pro

Having said that, please let me make it clear that I am not, nor have I been,

Right. And also, it's more in this case like _draining_ the reservoir.
The pagefile is only needed if you don't have enough RAM in the first place.
Silicon is much faster than spinning disk, so adding more use of spinning
disk won't speed anything up.

Other than that, ...

See my post on 5 April when I said that all was working well now and both
versions were working fine, I could read the documents and had no problems

Maybe this thread can end now? I was trying to give a suggestion to someone
else who was having problems firing up the right version of Adobe via
his/her browser

I have no problems
