Brevik Telemark Norway:
My grandfather Peter Martiniz Berg was born in either in Brevik or Porsgrunn on 16 November 1868.
His parents was: Englebret Olsen Berg (b. 5 Aug 1830 in Åsnes Hedmark Norway)
And Petra Marie Grαnseth (b 28 April 1842 in Brevik) she was the daughter of Peter Andreas Gronseth who was a Politiebetjent b 1815) and Maaren Gurine Olsdatter (b 1818).
Englebret and Petra were married 23 April 1865 in Brevik. Together they had many children. Englebret was a master shoe maker and Petra was a midwife. He died on the 11 Jan 1887/8 from an accident while sawing trees. The next year his oldest son Ole Berg immigrated to Wisconsin USA and worked for a couple years to send for his mother and most of the children. My grandfather Peter Martiniz immigrated about a year after Ole. My dates could be off somewhat, as I have seen it a couple different ways.
What I would like help on is the following:
1. I would like to locate the house in Brevik that Engllebret and Petra Olsen Berg lived in. and also the house or Peter and Maaren Grønseth. I did find them on the 1865 Brevik census living in the same household as Petter Andreas Grønseth. In the 1885 Brevik census Petter Grønseth residence was listed at 274 Grubbehaugen. I did not find Englebret and Petra Olsen Berg.
2. I would like to locate the grave of Englebret Olsen Berg, as well as any of the Grønseth families also.
3. I have never found my grandfather Peter Martiniz Berg’s birth record. I do not know if he was born in
Brevik or Porsgrun.
I did visit Brevik briefly about 25 years ago and though it was a very charming village. I hope to come back in Spring of 2006 and be able to locate all my families landmarks. I would really appreciate any local help on finding these landmarks and any suggestions. I am sorry I do not speak or read Norwegian. I would gladly pay any mailing fee’s if there is someone who does not have a computer. I have written recently to both the postmaster and the Brevik Library, but have not had a response.
