https://www.familysearch.org/search/rec ... 0States%22
https://www.familysearch.org/search/rec ... 0States%22
https://www.ancestry.com/boards/surname ... 96/mb.ashx

https://www.familysearch.org/search/rec ... %3Asigurd~

https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:MS3C-D1C
https://www.digitalarkivet.no/view/8/pe00000000989005
Axel 11 mnd https://www.digitalarkivet.no/view/8/pe00000000989010

T. Marks her:
https://www.familysearch.org/search/rec ... 0States%22
https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:FDSX-GF4

Her er Harald Oscars dåp 6.10.1878, f.28.5.1878:
SAO, Trefoldighet prestekontor Kirkebøker, F/Fa/L0004: Ministerialbok nr. I 4, 1876-1880, s. 107
Brukslenke for sidevisning: https://media.digitalarkivet.no/kb20060926010571

Her kommer innleggene tettere enn erterris.

Hi Truls. All I know now is that my father, Alexander Thurston Marks was born in United States, Territory of North Dakota, May 11, 1880, He had 12 or 13 brothers and sisters.
His mother, Lenora Omaley was born in Ireland (no dates yet), his father, Christian Marks,
no dates yet). At age, 20, Dad married in Chicago, 1900 to Winifred Spaulding, age 17. Two children were born, Elizabeth A letter to A. T. Marks written in 1925 from Chas French, stating he was my Dad's "loving brother." I have a copy of my Dad's social security number, 490-16-9642 written in his hand, August 1, 1938. Hope to hear from you soon, Truls. Happy to meet you, new found relative. Patti Alexandria Marks Gartner.

I 1917 satt Harald fengslet iht. WW1 Draft Reg.

- barna nevnt som; Mrs. C.A.

https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:V19J-TS3

https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:V19J-TS3

Hei Truls
I think the William b. in 1929 is not related to the William Marks b. in 1941

Thank you very much Patty,
Well, it might be you found right William. But my Bill is William T. and yours is William C.
I know that a letter more or less is not whole world in these files, but still there is some space for a little doubt, isn`t it?

Re: Axel Marks
I am posting in English so American ancestors researching the same family may understand. I have tried to outline Axel Thorstein Marks/Olson through various sources. Here’s my findings thus far (I have chosen to split my contribution into 3 separate posts due to the extent).
Advice: While reading it’s essential to study the attachments (images) I refer to in the text.
We know he lived with his mother and siblings in Minneapolis according to census 1895. A comment from the same census stated a family of 7 by name Marks moved to Chicago - see previous post: https://slektsforum.slektogdata.no/view ... 791#746791
From a newspaper article from 1899 - see previous post: https://slektsforum.slektogdata.no/view ... 738#746738
we can read he was arrested for robbing a residence in the Midway district. The article tells he was well known in South Minneapolis where his father lived and his mother and sisters lived in Chicago. It further tells he had been sent to reformatory over 2 years ago for stealing wheat. This information correspond accordingly to a newspaper article from 1897- see attachment 1_2: The Saint Paul Globe, October 10, 1897, Page 3 - he’s referred to as Axel Olsen. Furthermore I find one Axel Marks in the US City Directories (USCD) 1898, Minneapolis.
The U.S. City Directories, 1822-1995
Name: Axel Marks
Residence Year: 1898
Street address: 1101 S 6th
Residence Place: Minneapolis, Minnesota, USA
Occupation: Upholstr
Publication Title: Minneapolis, Minnesota, City Directory, 1898
In the same year (Minneapolis Journal, October 15 1898, Page 14 - see attachment 1_2 - Axel Marks is mentioned in an article regarding Upholsterers Union - he was elected to the board of trustees. To my knowledge there’s no other with this name and occupation in Minneapolis, hence this must be the same man. Worth mentioning from the arrest of 1899 regarding robbing a residence in the Midway district, both men were acquitted - see attachment 3_4: The Saint Paul Globe, November 15, 1899, Page 8.
We know he married Marie Winifred Spaulding 20. February 1900 in Chicago, and the couple resided with his mother and sister on 365 Ave, Chicago according to census dated 4. June 1900. Not long after, Axel and his wife was arrested in Chicago charged with passing raised bills - see newspaper article in previous post: https://slektsforum.slektogdata.no/view ... 739#746739
The “gang” was living in a flat at 365 Grand Ave (same address as census 1900) and a complete plant for making raised bills was found in their appartment. The news of this arrest made headlines throughout newspapers in the US and Axel's wife was named being one passing the bills - see attachment 3_4: Holbrook Argus (Holbrook, Arizona) 18 Aug 1900, Page 2. Although Axel’s wife is mentioned in the article about the arrest she does not appear in others regarding the matter, thus it’s hard to determine how she was involved or if she was jailed.
I haven’t found much about the sentencing, except a comment in the newspaper Svenska Amerikanska Posten, December 4 1900, Page 14 - see attachment 5_6 - where it states the men had been transferred to Chicago and sentenced to one term in jail.
The next we hear about Axel is when his brother Sigurd was arrested in 1901. It’s a rather long article regarding Sigurd and the crime, therefore I have only attached a clip as to how Axel was involved. Again, the address 365 Ave (his mother's flat) was cited and the woman visiting him in jail was most likely his wife, Winifred - see attachment 5_6: The Saint Paul Globe, 26 Jan 1901, Page 1. I have also clipped the last paragraph of the article portraying the 3 brothers (age of Axel and Harald is swapped) - see attachment 7_8_9: The Saint Paul Globe, 26 Jan 1901, Page 3.
Now, it seems to quiet down on the criminal front and we know from previous posts Axel and his wife had 2 children; Elizabeth Winifred

The last trace of him in directories is found in Minneapolis City Directory 1913 - see attachment 7_8_9: Although I do find him selling a piano September 1913 - see attachment 7_8_9: Finance and Commerce of the Twin Cities, September 3, 1913. Was he selling to move away? In a notice from 1914 (June) in the same paper I find him owing money to Rosedale Grocery ($ 58.11 - Judgement Municipal Court) - this is the last I can find of Axel in Minneapolis.
Now, we know his wife (ex) and 2 children were found in census 1920, living in California - see previous post: https://slektsforum.slektogdata.no/view ... 718#746718
The name of her new husband was Earl Guy Horton and he was born 26. November 1890 in Calabasas, LA County, CA and died 14. October 1946. His parents were Orren T and Sarah C Horton. Why is this important? Well, the peculiar story of Axel T Marks takes a bizarre twist! True or not - we will probably never find out - but it’s certainly adding spice to the story.
The first article appeared in The Los Angeles Times, January 13 1913, Page 11 - see attachment 10_11 (article long, hence a clipped section). Earl G Horton was shot and all sorts of accusations was made, including fraud charge and shooting himself. He was even arrested, but his mother took the witness stand which freed him. However, the plot thickened because Axel T Marks name showed up - see attachment 10_11: The Los Angeles Times, January 28 1913, Page 18.
Quote: “Horton received a newspaper clipping yesterday from Minneapolis, mailed anonymously, which says that Alex T. Marks, a furniture dealer in that city, has named Horton as correspondent in an action for divorce, and has produced alleged love letters written by him to be used in evidence. Mrs. Marks came to Los Angeles over a year ago for her health, and Horton admits he saw a good deal of her. He said yesterday he suspects Marks may have had something to do with his shooting, although he has no evidence to substantiate this belief”.
I haven’t found the suit for divorce yet, nevertheless one can only speculate as Mr. Horton did.
Anyway, Earl G Horton and Marie Winifred Marks (Spaulding) married in 1916 - see attachment in separate post: San Diego Union, 29 November 1916, Page 16.
From here on I have not found the name Axel used, only Alex or Alexander (with or without the middle letter T or middle name Thurston). There’s strong reason to believe it’s the same man, though I am not able to prove it.

He remarried 1933 in Jackson, Missouri - see previous post: https://slektsforum.slektogdata.no/view ... 723#746723
But what happened to Ida Belle? Since he married in Missouri, he/they must have moved there at some point between 1931 and 1933. The only trace I can find regarding Ida Belle is a brief note in Kansas City Star, April 25, 1931 Page 8 - see attachment 20_21_22_23 . The question is; was she the wife of Alex(ander) T Marks?
His age (42) at the marriage 1933 does not correspond to other sources (except census 1940), however if we compare his signature from various documents I am impelled to believe it’s the same man we find in other records.
The woman he married was Patti M Hayes (b. Shaffer), she was first married to Robert C Hayes in 1927.

Alexander T marks sat up shop in Kansas City, MO and he’s found listed under Upholsterers and on private address in 1934, USCD.

He was also listed in USCD at the same address in 1937. Then he was listed under Upholsterers in USCD 1940, address 4462 State Line, Kansas City, Kansas (Western side of Kansas City, KC/MO). My guess is he had moved shop, because in the census 1940 his private address was 4133 Bell St, Kansas City, MO - see previous post: https://slektsforum.slektogdata.no/view ... 723#746723
Link FS Census 1940: https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:K743-GKH
I find him listed in USCD with Patti at the 4462 State Line address until 1945.
If we return to the census of 1940, it states his age to be 49 (born ca 1891, correspond to marriage of 1933) and birthplace listed as Wyoming (which is a disparity from other documents). Conceivably not the most crucial disclosure from this cenus, however rather inane: Highest Grade Completed was College, 4th year! Clearly, a concocted “tale” in regard to the birthplace Wyoming, the age stated and education.
Others in the census are his wife Patti (Hayes/Shaffer) from the marriage of 1933, 2 daughters and 1 stepdaughter, also found in the aforementioned 1930 census along with mother Patti M Hayes.

This is the same man as in census 1940, thus the same man that married in 1933. Residence and business addresses correspond with those found in census and USCD, so does his occupation. His description on page 2: height 5’9”, weight 176, blue eyes, brown hair, light complexion. His description from WW 1 DRC: height medium, weight medium, blue eyes, brown hair. See attachment 24_25_26: 1942_WW 2 DRC_Page 2 and 1918_WW 1_DRC_Page 2.

Signature_WW 1_DRC_1918
Signature_Marriage Cert_1933
Signature_WW 2_DRC_1942
I am no handwriting expert, but I am quite certain the signatures from Marriage Certificate and WW 2 DRC are written by the same man. Compared with the WW 1 DRC I would say there are similarities, however I would advocate for an expert’s opinion.
Summary:
Axel Thorstein was born 11. May 1880 in Norway. His parents were Christen Olsen (Mørch) and Lena Cypriansen. It’s without doubt him we find in records and newspapers in Chicago and Minneapolis until 1914. But, then what? Did he change his name to Alex/Alexander and moved to Lincoln, Nevada, then onto Santa Barbara and Ventura, California and further on to Kansas City, Missouri and finally Glendale, Arizona? Did he move west to get closer to the children he had with Marie Winifred? Did he change his name, birthplace and mother’s name in attempt to conceal his murky past? These are questions of speculation of course, yet worth pondering. According to his daughter, Patti A, he never spoke of his parents or siblings - https://www.ancestry.com/boards/surname ... 15/mb.ashx
another indication he was wary of his past.
The facts indicating Axel Thorstein Olson/Marks and Alex/Alexander Thurston Marks is one and the same are the following:
Born 11. May 1880
Occupation: Upholsterer
Name similarity (Axel Thorstein/Alex(ander) Thurston)
Name of father (Christen/Christian O. Marks)
Disparities in records:
Born in Belfield (Stark County), North Dakota
Born in Wyoming (around 1891)
Father’s origin (Germany)
Name of mother (Lenora O. Malloy/O’Malloy)
Mother’s origin (Ireland)
Education cenus 1940 (College, 4th year)
Occupation WW 1 DRC (Structural Engineer)
To my knowledge there’s no Alexander Thurston Marks born in ND 11.5.1880 or in Wyoming around 1891, nor can I find Christen O. Marks (Germany) and Lenora O’Malloy (Ireland) throughout US (with 11-12 children according to daughter patti A. Marks). There’s a possibility he used Olson/Olsen as surname, although unlikely considering he was referred to as Marks in records and newspapers till 1913/14.
Missing records:
Naturalization (for Axel as well as his parents and siblings).
Census 1920 and 1930.
Marriage Record second wife Helen(a) (1914-1918).
Divorce from first wife Marie Winifred and divorce from last wife Patti M.
Cemetery location Alexander T Marks, Ida B Marks and Patti M Marks (Shaffer, Hayes/Lancaster - remarried).

I have clipped his signature from these documents for you to compare, see attachments Attachment_29_30_31:

I am no handwriting expert, but I am quite certain the signatures from Marriage Certificate and WW 2 DRC are written by the same man. Compared with the WW 1 DRC I would say there are similarities, however I would advocate for an expert’s opinion.

Takk for fine ord, Mathias!

Iht. FT 1910 så var han da Naturalisert.
