PAF 5 file format?

Legg inn av Phil Wright » 24 jan 2005 13:29:59

I want to be able to load PAF 5 format files into my own software I am
writing. Is there a definition written somewhere for the file format?
I tried searching the internet but cannot find anything, maybe I am
missing something obvious.

I already have the GEDCOM 5.5 definition. If you know of any written
definition for other popular programs like FTM then that would be
great as well. I want my program to load as many of the known formats
as possible.

Many thanks,
Phil.

It sounds as though the GenBridge(tm) Software Development Kit (SDK) would
be the sort of thing you're looking for.

It's a proprietary format belonging to the LDS who own PAF so if it is

published, which I doubt, it'll be on Familysearch.org.

They did publish the specs for the PAF 2.31 (DOS) format, of which I
have a copy, but I haven't heard anything about the possibility of their
doing the same with PAF5 -- at least for public distribution. They
obviously have published the format for use by commercial genealogy
software publishers such as Ancestral Quest who have a PAF import
function though. It couldn't hurt to ask. However, I'm not sure you
would gain a great deal trying to import directly from PAF over a GEDCOM
transfer.

You have to contact them directly. I had and used the PAF 2.3 file
structure and when they published PAF 3 I contacted FHC, signed an agreement
and got a information on the PAF 3 structure. Ended up I gave up trying
to use it. The information on the structure had to be picked out of C file
listings and the new programs such as Legacy had better features than what I
was producing.
