Hi ~
I have a PDF that is in Gothic Norwegian, but it is not searchable. Does anyone know of a free, online or downloadable software system that could convert this to a searchable or a Word document?
I have been able to do this with today's Norwegian script, but not the Gothic.
Takk -- De kan skrive paa norsk,
John

Veeery «late» response – although a member, I’m not too often a user . . .
You have got zero answers this far. . So I thought: Too bad
Well, seriously, I’m sorry but I can’t recommend any translating/converting software from gothic. Simply because I know of none such . .
What I can recommend, however, is submitting your PDF to one of the Forums dedicated to the «deciphering» of gothic texts into latin letters.
Links:
https://forum.arkivverket.no/forum/7-ty ... de-kilder/
https://slektsforum.slektogdata.no/viewforum.php?f=2352
There you will find several highly skilled «codebreakers» who, no doubt, will convert the text for you. Volunteers who, in the best Norwegian spirit, does this for free all the time.
[Just keep in mind, the «translation» will of course mirror the original arcaic spelling as well as arcaic ways of constructing a sentence. The only difference will be the letters.(Latin instead of Gothic)]
And then maybe you can apply your software that makes today’s norwegian script searchable.
Just a thought.
And a second thought . . . It might be that I have answered a couple of non-existant questions.
Dear me! (British lineage «ju neu»
You never asked: What does my PDF-file say?
You never asked: Can somebody please translate this?
And that’s what I’ve been answering to, more or less.
Crikey!!
Nevertheless (in one breathless word) I leave this posting «as is» – in case you, in spite of all, could find at least some of it usefull.

Re: convert Gothic Norwegian PDF to Searchable PDF
Thanks so much, Even. I will give that other group a try and see what those code-writers can do?
As for the other questions, I can read Gothic script quite well -- I love the artistry of it and long ago learned to read it in German -- and also don't have a problem understanding what it says.
But, I have a several hundred page book without an index, and I would like to search for specific kommuner and people.
Ha det godt!

Ookeey, so I was correct in (too late) realizing that your problem was not reading the Gothic text, but how to «process» it.
Sorry for misunderstanding, but thank you for answering anyway.
And allow me to add: I'm really impressed by you being able to fluently read Gothic handwriting. I myself have struggled over the matter for aprox. 30 years, and still struggling on . . .
Hoping to ascend into excellency before checking out . . .
All the best

Re: convert Gothic Norwegian PDF to Searchable PDF
Takk for sist, Even.
I, too, struggle with written items, and especially European writing. Luckily, I have an aunt who was born in Germany and has a business in translating Gothic handwriting.
But, Gothic printed script in a book is quite easy, I think, especially in contest.
Ha det veldig bra!
