John Selvaag, i Duluth i 1910

Legg inn av Knut Ragnar Ansnes » 02 mar 2016 20:04:05

Hei,
fullt navn John Edvard Nilsen Selvaag, født 4 mars 1883 i Fillan sogn, Hitra.
Han emigrerte 16 april 1907 fra Trondheim, og det sies at han kom til Boston. Oppgitt bestemmelsessted: Iron River, Wisconsin:
http://gda.arkivverket.no/cgi-win/webce ... 30633#ovre

Vennlig hilsen

Hei Knut Ragnar
I found this fellow..but of course John Nelson is a common name.
I understand the immigration year is off (1908 instead of 1907)...his age is "estimated" as age 26....Too bad they do not give an actual month and year of birth in this 1910 census.
His job is only listed as a common laborer..so not much help there regarding the kind of work he does.
He is a lodger with Carrie Olson (indexed as Carrie "Alson"), age 54 a widow and her daughter, Clara, age 25. (listed on the census page before John Nelson)

https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:M2PG-4T6
(if you try to look at the view document..John Nelson in on the top of the next page)

I did look in the 1920 census in Duluth...this John Nelson is not there...so that "fits" with Your John, since he is back in Norway by 1920.
Then it is possible John from Duluth that I found, moved somewhere else....

From general information I found, it looks like the 1910 census was done about April 1910.
The census for John Nelson does not list the actual date it was done (that line is blank!)

Patty

Thank you Patty !
I realize that the name is very common; but the chances are that you have found him.
I will speak with his granddaughter in case the names quoted can tell her anything.
John and his wife had an only child, a son who by coincidence married a Clara (Klara), but she was born long after 1885, and is now deceased. I can not find a connection there. Neither can I find any Carrie (Kari, Karen) in the area who was born abt 1856 and emigrated abt 1871.

Thanks again
Knut Ragnar

Hei igjen Knut Ragnar
You are welcome!!
Oh that would be great if I found the right John Nelson!
Often there is no connection when a "lodger" lives with a family..
but since you said John at first was going to Wisconsin I should at least comment that Carrie Olson's daughter Clara was born in Wisconsin. (this could mean nothing..but then again you never know...maybe John knew Carrie and family in Wisconsin!)

I will be interested what John's granddaughter thinks about this John Nelson!

mvh
Patty
