http://digitalarkivet.arkivverket.no/ft ... 7002002770

Hei!
So Gustav was at the Worlds Fair in 1939 (that was in Queens county, NY)..
I don't know what Vanity Fair is...? does anyone else understand that?
The photo:
The name on the side is some sort of "contractor" business (like for building)
The last line may be short for Broadway (B' Way), NY?
That would be a street address in New York City...IF (!!) it is "Broadway".
It is a cool photo!
I wonder if he is registered for the WW 2 draft (1942)...

I'm afraid it is my fault that "Vanity Fair" was written in the mail. A slip of the brain. The correct name is of course, World's Fair. Vanity fair, however, is a book, written by William Thackeray about 1850. Rather famous and filmed several times.
I was wondering if you have access to search among the grave-numbers at Potters Field?
This was (is?) a graveyard in NY in which unknown or poor people were buried. Most of the graves are nameless, but there might be a file with numbers/names to search in.

Hei Inger!
OH...Vanity Fair!!...I am glad you explained...I THOUGHT it was meant to be "Worlds Fair"...but then I felt a little silly, since there IS a magazine called Vanity Fair...and now I know there is also a book with the same name.
If I understand from what I have read Potters Field is on Hart Island
Perhaps this link may help...has a searchable database.

Re: Gustav Adolf Bergstrøm, f. 1897
Hi Patty.
Thank you so much for all your information and for spending so much of your time trying to help us find Gustav! I'm sorry for the delayed answer, but this weekend has been very hectic.
It might be the right Gustav, but in that case he must have been taken ill for some reasons , because he would know his birthdate and he would normally had addresses and pictures from his family in Norway in his possession. Then again, we don't know what happened to him and I think this is the best clue so far. Being a boarder seems credible and I have thought in those terms myself.
If he died in 1940 or shortly after, he could be buried at Potters Field. I was not able to get access to the database from my machine, but I shall try again.
Sincerly Inger

Re: Gustav Adolf Bergstrøm, f. 1897
Hei Inger!
Glad to try and help!!
Oh I am sure Gustav knew his birthdate!!
But keep in mind...the person who takes the census, just comes to each place (home), and asks who lives there and what is the age of each person etc.
If Gustav was not home...perhaps someone else gave the answer about his age (and it was not correct!).
My own mother is listed in a 1920 New York census, and the head of house is called her grandfather...and he was NOT her grandfather!...He was just the person who owned the home!
OR...this "Gus" could be the wrong person!
He also may not be buried in a Potters Field...
also the findagrave site is not complete...(if you have looked for him there).
I know from my own experience, it is very hard to search in the New York area..so MANY people...
North Dakota is much easier to seach in!!!.smile!!
all for now!

Hei Gunhild-Juliane
UFF DA!
How did that happen to his name in Ancestry!??!
It clearly says on the written census Gus Bergstrom! (I don't use Ancestry..use Heritage Quest with my library card).
Well, you found this "Gus"!
In familysearch I also found a Gustav Adolph Bergstrom who applied for naturalization in 1944 in Brooklyn...but his age was given as 65 years old...could the AGE be an error too???! Take off 20 years (!) and it would be close.
Is this a common Norwegian name...Gustav Adolph/Adolf Bergstrom????
There was also a record of a man (Gustav Bergstrom) who traveled to New York from Norway in 1955 (from Familysearch)...no age given. I could try an find it again...

I don't understand it either - its so clearly
There is several Gustav Adolf Bergstrøm to find, and just Gustav Bergstrøm is there many of. If it's a common name in Norway? Gustav is maybe, but Adolf are not used so often I think. In Sweden, where he was borned, I think it's more common with Gustav Adolf. I am not sure, but I guess
The strange thing is that he had good contact with the family until 1940, and then nothing. That's why they think he maybe died shortly after 1940.
Re: Gustav Adolf Bergstrøm, f. 1897
Hei!
I think Gustav was born in Norway (right?)..but his parents were born in Sweden.
OK...the Gustof who died 1971 is not the right one...thanks for finding that in the SSDI
Gunhild-Juliane!
Thanks also for contacting Ancestry about the transcription error!

Re: Gustav Adolf Bergstrøm, f. 1897
Gustav was born in Oslo (Grorud). His parents imigrated from Sweden. They did not arrive together, but met and got married here. They had four sons and Gustav was the son no.3.
I see you discuss his name. - Gustav Adolf, has been the name of several Swedish kings, and it was quite popular in Sweden to name thei children with a kings' name. As for the use in Norway, I agree with Juliane.
Inger
