Sigurd and Helmik Sigurd Tønnesen

Legg inn av gj11106 » 30 sep 2014 21:18:44

I am confused and not sure which person - Sigurd or Helmik Sigurd - is a brother to my grandmother, or if there were two 'Sigurds' in the family. According to what information I have, Sigurd was the third child born in 1891 to Helmik Olai and Cecilie Tønnesen (1900 Census has Helmik at prisoncamp; Cecilie living at Nygaden 84, Farsund). The 1910 Census for Helmik and Cecilie, now living at Brogate 11, Farsund, lists a 'Helmik Sigurd' born in 1910. In Helmik's estate papers, 'Sigurd' is listed as an heir and there is no 'Helmik Sigurd.' Another child born in 1910 would give my GGrandparents 8 children and we were always told they had only 7 children. Might Helmik Sigurd (b. 1910) be a nephew or grandchild or something?

The one born 1910 is their son. Baptism here, No. 22.

Sigurd born 1891,(the one you find in 1900census), is also baptisted Helmik Sigurd. So there were two of them, but the first one died in 1906.

Baptism in 1891.

Linda, You have been very helpful; your comments and documents explain very well why I was coming across two 'Sigurds' in this family. On the baptisms, the people named on the right side of the page, I assume, are sponsors. I can translate the names relatively well, but does it also say what their occupation is? Also, on the Sigurd born in 1891, I can't translate all of the notations in the sponsor column. Could I please ask you to help me with that? Many Thanks. Margie

This is a Google translate link to the occupations of the persons involved.
https://translate.google.com/?hl=no#no/ ... C%20fadder

What you call sponsors are called fadder in Norwegian, and translated to 'mentor' by Google. I think witness may be another word for it? Machinist or mechanic probably works with steam engines on a ship.
Also, the last fadder mentioned is 'pige', which means 'girl', usually an umarried woman, but could also be a 'maid'?

BTW, here's Helmik Olai in jail in 1900: http://digitalarkivet.arkivverket.no/ft ... 7216002954

Thanks for the translations. I wasn't sure if occupations were what the other words were, but guessed as such. Not sure why they would include that in the church records, but it's wonderful information to be able to get! Yes, I've learned much about Helmik's imprisonment; he put himself in a sad situation. It makes me wonder how much that influenced his children's emigrations to America. He also lost a 15 year old son in 1906, although I haven't been able to determine what happened. Many thanks. Margie.

It is actually not unusual that they write the cause of death too.
On the first 1906 page of burials in Farsund I looked at I found that child: http://www.arkivverket.no/URN:kb_read?i ... _side=-252
Unfortunately there's no cause of death there. It would be in column 9, Opgiven dødsårsag.
One cause written on that page is 'tæring', tubercolosis, which was a very common cause of death at that time.
You should also be aware of that the church records usually are written twice - once in the minsterial book, and also a copy in the klokker book. Sometimes the copy is better and more detailed than the main book.
Hence, in the klokker book for Farsund at http://www.arkivverket.no/URN:kb_read?i ... _side=-239 you will find the cause of death.
It's called hjertebetennelse, which woudl translate to 'heart inflammation', or Myocarditis?
