FTM Version problem

Legg inn av Doug » 26. desember 2004 kl. 15.50

Hello and happy holidays.

Recently, I had to reinstall my computer due to a host of issues. I then
re-installed my version of FTM version 7 (7.0.185.0) and the software won't
open my FTW file because the file is a newer version than my software.

I must have upgraded at some point, but I don't have the upgraded nor do I
have any information as to what version the file is. I tried to find an
email address for support, but couldn't find one on the genealogy.com site.

I plan to upgrade at some point to 2005, but can anyone tell me how I can
determine what version my FTW file is?

Thank you!
Doug

You could try this

http://www.mudcreek.ca/genviewer_overview.htm

The other way would be to chuck it into a hexeditor and the headers
might give you a version number.

Most programs should have this info in Help, About on the menu at the top of
the page.

Helen,

I think the problem which Doug has is with the FTW file which
won't open, not with the *program*; so I don't think looking at
Help-About is going to answer his question.

I just had a look at one of my FTW files (v10) with a binary
editor (and the 'strings' command in Linux for good measure) and
couldn't see anything which looked like a version number.

I don't have any other ideas for finding out which version the
file was created under. Maybe upgrading to 2005 is a good idea!

Thanks all. Yes, the problem is that I have the FTW file, and the file was
made with a newer version than the FTM software I have. I think I'm going to
upgrade to 2005. I was probably ready to do it anyway. I must have
downloaded an upgrade along the way that converted my FTW file to the newer
version.

Question: I see that there are a few different boxed versions of FTM 2005.
You can order just the program from http://www.ftm2005.com/ for $30, or, I
can buy the retail boxed version of which there's a $49 version, and a $99
version. Any big advantages to going with the $49 over the $30 version? .

Thanks!
Doug

Thanks again for the help.
