Legg inn av gj10647 » 6. mai 2014 kl. 23.03

Looking for information regarding Jens Amundson born about 1837, emigrated to America most likely to Wisconsin. Married to Martha Amundsdatter the daughter of Amund Baldsven and Anna Knutesdatter. Anna was born in 1802 in Åkre, Brunkenberb, Telemark. Used the last name of Emerson in America.

Not able to find them in Norway.

Thank you for any and all help.

Hello

Brunkeberg is a "sub parish" of Kviteseid parish in Telemark.

On the right side here is the christening of Anne Knudsdatter Aakre.

Døbt Knud Tovsen Aakres Datter Anne ...

And below: Moderen Birgit Lejuvsd. intr. 2 S. e. Paaske

Kildeinformasjon: Telemark fylke, Kviteseid, Ministerialbok nr. I 4 (1800-1814), Fødte og døpte 1802, side 17.

Permanent bildelenke: http://www.arkivverket.no/URN:NBN:no-a1 ... 350085.jpg

So the parents are Knud Tovsen and Birgit Lejuvsdatter. They are on the 1801 census for Kviteseid - Anne was not yet born then, but there are 6 older siblings

I find a marriage taking place on November 7th 1830 between Anne Knudsdatter Aachre (28 years old) and Leiuf Sørensen Sandager (31 years old)

Kildeinformasjon: Telemark fylke, Brunkeberg i Kviteseid, Klokkerbok nr. II 1 (1815-1842), Ekteviede 1830-1832, side 208.

Here they have the son Søren Leiufsen born on February 8th 1831 (no. 8 )

Kildeinformasjon: Telemark fylke, Brunkeberg i Kviteseid, Ministerialbok nr. II 1 (1815-1836), Fødte og døpte 1831, side 63.

And here is a son Knud Leiufsen born in 1834 (no. 11)

Kildeinformasjon: Telemark fylke, Brunkeberg i Kviteseid, Ministerialbok nr. II 1 (1815-1836), Fødte og døpte 1834, side 75.

Permanent bildelenke: http://www.arkivverket.no/URN:NBN:no-a1 ... 360331.jpg

Then there is the son Tallef born in 1839 (no 13)

Kildeinformasjon: Telemark fylke, Kviteseid, Ministerialbok nr. I 6 (1836-1858), Fødte og døpte 1839, side 32.

Permanent bildelenke: http://www.arkivverket.no/URN:NBN:no-a1 ... 030842.jpg

And then the daughter Birgit in 1840 (no 76)

Kildeinformasjon: Telemark fylke, Kviteseid, Ministerialbok nr. I 6 (1836-1858), Fødte og døpte 1840, side 46.

Leiuf is sometimes spent Leiuf and sometimes Leuf and when Birgit is christened I read is as Leif.

Here is Anne Knudsdatter on the 1865 census for Kviteseid. She is a widow. Her son Tallef is living in the same place. The husband Leiuf Sørensen, age 57, died in 1857. Anne Knudsdatter, age 64, died in 1866.

I dont understand how Martha Amundsdatter fits into this? I had a quick took to see if Anne Knudsdatter had a child before she got married, but I could not find that she had.

The name Martha was not much used in Telemark. I think there were no Marthas when I looked through the Kviteseid and Brunkeberg parish records.

Maybe this is not the right Anne Knudsdatter - but it is the Anne Knudsdatter Aakre (now spelt Åkre) born in Brunkeberg, Kviteseid, Telemark in 1802 - that should be quite certain.

By the way, should we look for the marriage of Jens and Martha in Norway or did they emigrate separately, met each other in America and got married there?

And Baldsven - are you sure you have got that right? Looks a bit "strange". Have you got a source?

Did Jens use the name James in America?
I can find a family here in Ettrick, Wisconsin in 1880: James and Martha Emerson with their children

http://gda.arkivverket.no/cgi-win/webce ... 9658#nedre

On the next page are children John M. and Agnethe A.

I found the same family on the 1900 census for Ettrick, Trempealeau county, Wisconsin.

James (Jens) was born in December? 1836 and Martha in July 1841. Year of emigration was 1857 for both of them. James (Jens) would have been old enough to travel by himself, but Martha was younger (about 16?) so she did perhaps emigrate with her parents?

According to M. Ulvestad p. 278 Jens Emerson, Ettrick, Wisconsin was a soldier in the American Civil War. Unfortunately nothing about where in Norway he came from.

Found that many early settlers came from Biri, Oppland, Norway.

I found a Marthe Ammundsdatter born in Biri, Oppland county 29th July 1841
She could perhaps be a "candidate"?

Kildeinformasjon: Oppland fylke, Biri, Ministerialbok nr. 4 (1829-1842), Fødte og døpte 1841, side 85.

I would have liked to do some more research in Biri, but there are not a lot of parish records for Biri on the digital archive. Many records were destroyed by a fire at the vicarage in 1890.
