Nachkommen Gorms Des Alten

Hi,

I'm a new lister in this group and I'm dipping my toes into the
shark-infested waters of medieval genealogy in public for the first
time.

My wife (ancestry Denmark and Schlesvig-Holstein) could be descended
from Gorm the old. This is not too surprising as (I'm told) about 10%
of Danes can claim the same thing. Her 4th cousin in Denmark also
claims Gorm as an ancestor through a different route, but his GG
grandfather married into a pretty aristocratic family
(Krag-Juel-Vind-Friis), so his line is a little clearer. My wife's
family (Paulsen) can be found in "Danske Patriciske Slægter", Volume
1, by Sofus Elvius and H. R. Hiort-lorenzen (Vilhelm Trydes Forlag,
Kjøbenhavn, 1891), pages 232-253. I have also connected her to
everybody in the book, "Middealder Familier i Flensborg og
Nordfriesland"...., by Knud Gether (Dansk Historisk Håndbogsforlag,
Lyngby, Danmark, 1986). The starting point of Gether's family history
appears to be of my wife's 15G grandfathers.

A lot of research into the family was carried out by a cousin,
Henning Paulsen, who was the state archivist of South Jutland, and he
published a small book, "Stamtavle over Legatslægten Paulsen" in
1945. I have copies of all the above, plus another family history
written (by hand) by a fellow called Jul Bidstrup in 1888 (who he was
and why he wrote the family history I cannot say). I must say that
I'm glad that so much work has been done by people who are familiar
with old Danish and old German handwriting because I find the old
church-books excruciatingly difficult to decipher, even when they are
not rotted, water stained, eaten by insects and rodents, etc. The
pastors often used a strange mixture of Danish, German, Latin and
French (at times), liberally sprinkled with arcane abbreviations.

My wife's apparent links to Gorm go through the Krummedige, Juel,
Skram, etc. families and seem to have held up through much
correspondence with Scandinaviuan genealogists over the past few
years. Now I have a copy of "Nachkommen Gorms Des Alten", by S. Otto
Brenner, Silberburg-Verlag, Werner Jäckh, Stuttgart, 1965 and it
seems to confirm what I think I know about these links. However,
Brenner appears to have a bit of a mixed reputation among
Scandinavian genealogists. I probably shouldn't repeat what some
people have told me, but even they agree that Brenner can be
considered more reliable if he is not producing genealogies "to
order", as it were.

But, I did browse the archives of SGM and I did see a comment that
some of the links in Brenner are more "speculative" than others, and
I see this immediately in the second generation where he gives four
children of Gorm (Knud Gormsen, Harald Gormsen Blåtand, Gunnhild
Gormsdatter and Toke (Vale-Toke) Gormsen) and where, as far as I have
been able to find out, only Harald can be verified historically
(luckily, my wife's possible decent goes through Harald).

Can anybody give me some pointers regarding other links in Brenner's
book which are now considered "speculative", or point me to a
critique of the book if one exists?

Regards,

Mike King.
