Dear Douglas:

Thank you very much for your valuable information in
connection with the ancestry of Katrine Ryvers who,
with her first husband William Lokhull, were
plaintiffs in a lawsuit, the defendant being Margaret
de Monther.

It is rather surprising that you were the only
subscriber to be aware of the Ripariis Family because
they were Barons of some consequence possessing
considerable properties in Hampshire, Devonshire,
Dorset, and Cornwall from the 1100s. Perhaps what is
rather confusing is that the family is known under the
name of Ripariis, Redvers, Rivers, and even Vernon!

John Bulkeley, son of Robert Bulkley of Eaton, married
Christiana Ripariis 1370-1380. Christiana was a
descendant of Baldwin who accompanied William the
Conqueror, and was from Reviers, Calvadas arr.Caen.
Richard de Redvers (died 1107) married Adliez
(daughter) William Peverel (Chester), and was father
of Baldwin the first Earl of Devon. Richard gave to
Montebourg Abbey the church of Reviers and also the
Manor of Loders Dorset. The Redvers continued to be
Earls of Devon for many generations.

The children of John Bulkeley and Christiana were
William and Roger. Christiana's brother Edmund
Ripariis had a daughter Katherine. Katherine was first
married to William Lekhull (Rivers) and was granted
(after the consideration of many claims) by Richard II
the right to the Ripariis properties.

Study of Regista Regum Anglo-Normans 1066-1154 Vol.2,
and you will find four or five dozen Henry Ist
Charters in which Richard Redvers and his sons are
mentioned granting properties to the Abbey of
Monteboug and other religious establishments in
France, and also as Witnesses. Also may be found
Witnesses such as William Patricius (Le Lande Patric)
and the Mandeville family.

What is of some interest is the connection between the
Ripariis, the Mandeville, the Le Lande Patric, and the
Bulkley Families. All families are found in Essex,
Devon, Dorset, Hampshire, Kent, and Normandy, and
appear to be interconnected.

For example the Kent Archealogical Society published
an extremely interesting write up about Patrixbourne
Church (close to Canterbury Kent). Bourne became
Patrisbourne when Richard Le Lande Patric held the
property at Domesday, and the church was built in the
1100s by the Patrics. The writer commented about a
very fine seal of the Patric Family, and noted that it
was nearly identical to the Earl William Mandeville
seal of Essex.

This is perhaps not surprising. Maud Patric married
William Mandeville of Essex. Read Loyd's account of
the Mandevilles in Devon, and one discovers that Henry
Ist gave Alphington Devon to Ralph Le Lande Patric.
Maud was either his daughter or grand daughter.

And whilst the Mandervilles were in Devon, Richard and
Baldwin Redvers were in their prime. Hampshire Public
Records Office has a fantastic historic record of
properties and property owners. Thus the activities of
William Bulkley Chief Justice Chester (son) of John
Bulkeley, and the subsequent activities of Charles
Bulkley (grandson) in Hampshire and Devon can be
learnt in detail.

Katherine Ryvers (wife of William Lokhull) was the
daughter of Edmund Ryvers (brother of Christiana
Ripariis). As far as the properties were concerned,
Chistiana Ripariis and Katherine Ryvers were the end
of the line for their family.

My current curiousity is Robert Bulkelegh of Eaton,
son of Robert Bulkelegh 1310-1375, and father of John.
He was recorded as sheriff of Cheshire 1339-1342,
married Isabel Egerton daughter of Philip Egerton
presumably late in life because John Bulkeley was not
an adult 1378 when he declined the honor of defending
the Castle of Cherbourg in Normandy (Patent Rolls)

Thank you again Douglas. Your assistance valuable and
greatly appreciated.

Sincerely Yours,

Paul Bulkley

If you are researching the Redvers family and connections you will save
yourself time & trouble by consulting _Charters of the Redvers Family and
the Earldom of Devon, 1090-1217_, edited by Robert Bearman, Devon and
Cornwall Record Society, new series 37 (1994), with a very useful
introduction.
