Good news: FHL to scan books, put online

Hello to the list. In connection with the recent announcement of Google's
digitization program, I was wishing (on list) that the Family History
Library's collections might somehow be available online.

A reliable source advises me, "The FHL is setting up a program to scan
books of interest to the [Gen-Medieval] group into text format to make it
freely available and readily searchable. This will eventually include all
the important primary sources such as CIPM, CCR, CPR, Feudal Aids, etc.
We are trying to iron out the details of going about this right now.

"As to microfilmed collections of things like probate records and parish
registers...the FHL is working on making this available, but each contract
has to be completely renegotiated afresh. It cannot just scan things on
microfilm, unless they are out of copyright (British Crown Copyright for
publications goes to 1954)."

Happy holidays to all. Cheers, Dolly in Maryland USA
