Major Google digitisation project announced

It's been announced that Google is to digitise out-of-copyright books and
periodicals from 5 major academic libraries, including the full collections
of Michigan and Stanford Universities (the other ones are Harvard, the
Bodleian Library in Oxford and the New York Public Library):
http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/technology/4094271.stm

There will also be access to "extracts and bibliographies" of works still in
copyright.

The article mentions a timescale of 6 years for the Michigan collection, but
other sources say that a sample of the material will be made available
today.

Here's a page of information on the Google website:
http://www.print.google.com/

It sounds as though relatively few books are available yet, and whatever's
there should already be showing up in response to ordinary Google searches
(something I've never noticed). And what is available so far is mainly new
books provided by publishers, to which access is obviously restricted. (Note
that even the examples illustrated on the FAQ page don't actually produce
any search results from books.)

So perhaps we shouldn't expect to see any of the scanned books from
libraries showing up just yet:
"We've also just announced partnerships with some well-known libraries, so
your Google search results should start showing you more and more books from
these collections as well."

Hello to the list. More on this, including commentary, at
nytimes.com

Wouldn't it be splendid all round if they would work out a deal with the
Family History Library?

Cheers, Dolly in Maryland

Thanks for this. I particularly like these parts:
<<
Because the Google agreements are not exclusive, the pacts are almost
certain to touch off a race with other major Internet search providers like
Amazon, Microsoft and Yahoo.
....
Last night the Library of Congress and a group of international libraries
from the United States, Canada, Egypt, China and the Netherlands announced a
plan to create a publicly available digital archive of one million books on
the Internet. The group said it planned to have 70,000 volumes online by
next April.

Some more details of the Google project are given in this SearchEngineWatch

This sounds like a great idea . . . . as long as it involves only books in
the public domain.

If not, it will be the mother of all copyright violations. As someone who
makes a living SELLING the books I've written, this makes me very nervous.

At this time, there is already a lot of scanned books on the net.
For example, you will find them on the web sites of

BNQ/Bibliothèque nationale du Québec, 1,500 titles
(http://www.bnquebec.ca/numtextes/accueil.htm)

BNF/Bibliothèque nationale de France (http://gallica.bnf.fr) (50,000
titles)

Canadiana is a set of books scanned and OCRized. Pages are searchable
but the content must be binded manually (you display each page).
http://www.canadiana.org

Only BNF has books relevant to medieval genealogy.
