Mathilda Meyer
Hi,
I am looking for emigration and the norwegian home of this person:
Mathilda/Matilde Meyer, born Nov 1855 in Norway.
She arrived in Eau Claire, Wisconsin in 1873 and immediately married Jacob Jacobsen Wangen. Jacob was from Vangen nordre in Nordre Fron, Oppland. I looked for Matilda in Nordre Fron, but did not find her there.
She may have also used the name Matilda Olsen. One FT says she arrived in 1870, but all other records say 1873.
I have all records from America exept a marriage record, there were no marriages recorded at that time. I only Need info on Matilda, not on Jacob Jacobsen Vangen.
Mvh,
Brian

Hi Vivi,
No, the familysearch.com index is wrong. The original census record says Norway.

Hi Brian
If the census is the only source of Mathilde beeing born 1855 this might be one year off (as you know censuses are often wrong)
Here is a Mathilde born in November in Land, Oppland fylke with father Ole Andersen. No Meyer or no Bentson in her mother's name and she is born 1856 not 1855.

Hi Margit and Vivi,
Thanks for your help. The marriage record Margit posted from 22 Sep 1873 is correct. The parents of Jacob Jacobsen Stensrud match.
Jacob was from Nordre Fron. I still think Jacob and Mathilda must have known each other in Norway.

Re: Mathilda Meyer
Ancestry.com gives me the following info on Mathilda's parents:
Ole Anderson, born 1831
Anna Bentson, born 1835
I can't find any source for these names and dates, but it does seem to match the marriage record.
Jacon Jacobsen Wangen arrived in 1870:
Left parish on 8 Jun 1870 (not married)
#86
Kildeinformasjon: Oppland fylke, Nord-Fron, Ministerialbok nr. 2 (1865-1883), Utflyttede 1871, Innflyttede 1871, side 457.

Mathilda arrived in 1873 and married the same year. I haven't found any records of her leaving Norway.

Re: Mathilda Meyer
My personal gut feeling is the one I sent you born in November of 1851. Did you check her out? Bent/Bernt is not that common of a name.
What does her death certificate say for birth date? What does her obituary say? What does her grave say? What does the Church book records say about her where she attended Church?

Hi Brian
I think Margit might have found the correct one.
The parents of Mathilde born in Hurum is Ole Andreassen and Anne Torine Bentsdatter.
Their birthdates however are not the same as those you have.

I also think Margit may be correct! Ole Andreassen was living on the farm MYHRE when he married, which could have been called "Meyer" in America. I'll see if I can trace her.

Hi
I tried to find out more about Mathilde yesterday, but I'm not able to find her or her surviving siblings anywhere.
She had an older brother Andreas (born Dec 15, 1849) and two younger brothers Oluf Antoni (born April 10, 1854 and died 1855) and Peter born Feb. 10, 1856.
Their mother died January 1858, but unfortunately no online probate.

Their father remarried 1860 in Røyken where he was born (Røgen = Røyken)

Hi Vivi,
Thanks again for the great help! The death records you found and the 2nd marriage for Mathilde's father really helped put things together.
I did find the conformation for Andreas:
Confirmation # 10
Kildeinformasjon: Vestfold fylke, Strømm, Ministerialbok nr. 1 (1861-1869), Konfirmerte 1865, side 128.

His mother's first Name is listed wrong, but I know the record is correct.
I wish the "Udfyttende" records were better for this parish! I would like to find a record of Mathilde leaving for America!

Re: Mathilda Meyer
Hi
Svelvik is not far from Drammen.
A lot of emigrantships departed from Drammen, but a lot of the records are lost (as far as I know).
Many of those ships leaving Drammen sailed to Canada and emigrants entered US from there. If you have a Ancestry-membership, maybe you can find her entering Canada and/or crossing the border?

Hi
This might be the death of Mathilde's older brother Andreas and younger brother Peter. Both died from the same illnes. And probably her grandfather Bent Bentsen Myhre.
This might explain why she emigrated around 1870 - if this is the correct Mathilde.
