Svingen in Slemdal?

Legg inn av Margit R Bakke » 3. november 2013 kl. 4.38

I need help figuring out where Berthea Andersen was born as it states Svingen in Slemdal. Where is Slemdal? It states she was born 1894 there. Where should I look for her birth?

She had a son in 1920 with Thure Rylander of Sweden. The child was adopted by Johannes Edvardsen Abelquist f.?? and his wife Helga Sofie of Tveter who lived in Moss.

Source information: Oslo county, Rikshospitalet, Parish register (official) nr. F 0017 (1919-1922), Birth and baptism records 1920, page 73.

Hello

Slemdal is the older name for Siljan.
It is in Telemark, near Skien.

This could also be Slemdal here in Oslo (earlier in Vestre Aker) - Tove

My two cents: The column with "'Svingen' - Slemdal" refers to the "bopæl" - current residence of the mother - not necessarily her place of birth. Furthermore, since the son's baptism took place in Christiania/Oslo, it seems likely in this case that Slemdal refers to the Slemdal neighbourhood in Vestre Aker in Oslo. "Svingen" may be a former street name or refer to present day Slemdalsvingen.

Just by the way, Slemdal in Vestre Aker (now in Oslo) is a stop on the metro line going up to Holmenkollen. Tove

Margit skrev:I need help figuring out where Berthea Andersen was born

I think her name is spelled Bertha Anderson in the parish.

As far as I can see, we so far have no evidence of Bertha being born in Norway. Bertha's last name Anderson could indicate Swedish parents or origin, as the -son ending is the Swedish equivalent to the Norwegian -sen ending. In Norway, then, Andersen is far more common than Anderson. However, regardless of this, Bertha could very well have been born in Norway.

My point is that her birth registration won't be found in any Norwegian parish if she actually was born in another country. :)

Margit skrev:and his wife Helga Sofie of Tveter who lived in Moss.

Helga Sofie is listed as f. Tveter with the f being an abbreviation of the word født, meaning born. Tveter was her last name until she got married.

Margit skrev:His grandchildren are looking for help to find more information and I am trying to help them. They are interested in the adopted parents and the birth parents.

The parish registration supplies some information about the parents:
Thure's occupation is kontorist (clerk)
Bertha's occupation is tp, abbreviation of Tjenestepige (maid servant)
Johannes' occupation is snedker (carpenter)
Helga Sofie's occupation is hstr, abbreviation of hustru (housewife)

Also it is stated in the parish, below Per Wærner's name, that "royal permission" for adoption was granted on Sep 3, 1923.

If a duplicate of this document exists in the National Archives of Norway, Bertha's place of birth might be found there.

Maybe a shot in the dark. Birth year is not correctly but it is not uncommon in the 1910 census.
