Dear Brom, Richard, et al.,
In Vol. II of Yorkshire Deeds, William Brown, F.S.A. provided
the texts (in English) of a number of deeds and wills for
individuals with ties to the manor of Barkisland, near Halifax
(pp. 20-32) [1]. Fortunately for descendants of the emigrant
William Farrar (and possibly others), pp. 20-23 deal in detail
with the Symmes family of Barnesley. Details are provided
concerning the family which were not included by Alvahn Holmes in
her marvelous work on William Farrar and his ancestry/descendants
[2].
Followup posts will provide the relevant text and notes, and
also a detailed pedigree for the family for your reference. The
result, at present, is the following chart of the Symmes family
and their near relations:

Would there be any connection to the Rev. Zechariah Symmes (1599-1670/71)
who emigrated to Massachusetts in 1634? Both his father and grandfather were
named William Symmes.

Re: Symmes of Barnsley, ancestors of William Farrar
Saturday, 11 December, 2004
Dear John (JSG),
I am not aware of the ancestry of Rev. Zechariah Symmes,
although I would tend to assume some relationship. Likewise
I would like to determine any relationship of the Symmes of
Barnesley and/or of Rev. Zechariah Symmes to Marmaduke Semmes
(aka Simms), the emigrant to Maryland - ancestor to the
well-known Capt. Raphael Semmes, amongst others.
Unfortunately, Rev. Symmes would evidently not be a
descendant of William Symmes 'senior' and his wife Margaret
Bosvile (although a descent from an otherwise unknown brother
of William and his brother Richard, the vicar of Halifax
cannot be ruled out). Their son, William Symmes 'junior'
d.s.p in 1501, leaving his sisters Alice, Isabel and Joan
(in her issue) as his coheirs.
Cheers,
John

Hello .... and Happy New Year.... to all,
In an earlier thread, evidence concerning the Symmes family of
Barnsley, co. Yorks. was presented, including the relationship to
Bosvile of Ardsley and the descent thereby of several families
(incl. Lacy of Brearley and Farrar of the Ewood) from Edward I of
England. Concerning the Symmes family itself, no further evidence
of an earlier descent had been developed beyond the known
patriarch, Richard Symmes 'the elder' of Barnsley (d. bef 6 Oct
1492).
In Vol. III of William Brown's series of Yorkshire Deeds, a
grant dated 23 April 1439 has been found which extends this
ancestry several generations. A further discussion of this and
related evidence will be provided in the next post in this thread:
below is the text (verbatim) edited by Mr. Brown, together with
his notes [Yorkshire Deeds III:119-120].
Cheers,

Re: Symmes of Barnsley, ancestors of William Farrar
Friday, 31 December, 2004
Hello All,
In addition to the evidence provided in the series Yorkshire
Deeds (ed. William Brown et al.), other important documentation re:
the Symeson or Symmes family of Barnsley, co. Yorks. (earlier of
Shipden) is provided in Turner's History of Brighouse, Rastrick and
Hipperholme, as well as the Wakefield Court Rolls.
The tenure of one particular group of lands provides proof of
the relationship between the generations shown below. In 1378,
there is record of the inheritance on the death of John Symson <1>
by his son John <2>:
' John Symson paid heriot 6s. 8d. for mess., 1/2 bovate,
12 acres of assart in Shepeden, his father John S. having
died....' [1].
These lands were added to before 21 May 1434, when we find
record of the following transfer from John Symson [either <2> above
as per Brown, or his son] to Richard Symson, aka Symmes <3>:
' John Symson a mess., new edifice, 1/2 bov., 15 acres
of roidland to Ric. s. Robt. Symson;...' [2]
Following the death of Richard Symmes <4>, vicar of Halifax in
1496, son of Richard Symmes [<3> above], his nephew and heir
William Symmes <5> is identified as inheriting this same group of
lands in the Wakefield Court Rolls:
' William Symmes junior thus became heir to his uncle Richard,
and on Oct. 7, 1497, paid 8s. 2d. heriot for the two
messuages, buildings, half bovate of land, and 15 acres of
roideland and 4 1/2 acres lately taken from the waste (by the
vicar) in Hipperholme, after the death of Richard Symmes,
vicar of Halifax, described as "patrui" of William
junior.'[3]
These same lands were part of an agreement between the coheirs
of William Symmes <5> in 1506, when ' Alice wife of Gerard Lacy,
Esq., Isabell wife of John Sayntpaule, and Johna wife of Thos.
Tryggot, paid 40s. heriot for mess., edifice, 1/2 bov., 15 acres of
roidland, 4 1/2 ac. formerly waste in Hyprum (graveship); Wm.
Symmes (brother of Alice and Isabella, and uncle of Johana) being
dead.' [4]
A detailed pedigree incl. sources will follow this post: this
will provide the evidence concerning the following chart showing
descent from one Symon de Dene, or Simon 'of the Dene' who fl. in
Shipden ca. 1320-1343.
