Valenza Komnene

Valenza Komnene (or Comnena) is generally considered the wife of Nicolo
Crispo [d. 1450], lord of Syros, and mother of Fiorenza Crispo who, in
1444, married Marco Cornaro. I have seen quoted on a web site the date of
1413 for the marriage of Valenza and Nicolo.

The History of Venice states that Caterina Cornaro, queen of Cyprus and
daughter of Fiorenza, was a great-granddaughter of the Trebizond emperor
John IV, but this is chronologically impossible. John was born in 1404/5
according to the Dictionary of Byzantium.

"~Ford~", in a message to the "Arab-and-Moslem-L" list apparently relayed
from David Hughes, states "Valenza Komnene is the sister [not daughter] of
Ioannes IV Komnenos, Tyrant of Trebizond", which would resolve the
chronological problem, but this message cited no evidence or source.

Can anyone contribute evidence, or point me to a source which might cite
evidence, to resolve this?

Try searching the archive (always a good practice before posting
questions to the newsgroup) for "Valenza" and you will find this has
been discussed several times, with references and especially valuable
comments from Pierre Aronax under a thread entitled "A Valid Seljukid
Descent"
