Nordbygaden

Legg inn av gj05515 » 28 jun 2013 08:52:10

Hello,

The 1865 census shows that the street "Nordbygaden" is in the Grønland Menighed district. The church records for Grönland start in 1859.

Where would the church records be for someone who lived on Nordbygaden BEFORE 1859?

Mvh,

Brian

At that time (before 1859) Norbygaden was a street (or a road) outside the town Christiania.
And Oslo (not the same as Christiania) was only a little place outside the town Christiania.
Early in the 1800´s it was not a road called Norbygaden. It was builded later in the 1800´s, i will guess between 1830 - 1850.

The two churches for that place (outside the town Christiania) at that time was Aker Church (now called Gamle Aker) and Oslo Church (Oslo hospital/now called Gamlebyen kirke).

Norbygaten is named after butcher Anders Norby (died 1853). He built the street. I have seen records from this area in Aker churchbooks. Grønland area was in Aker until 1859, when they included it in Kristiania, and they built the Grønland Church.

Try Aker, then Oslo Hospital/Gamlebyen. It is a bit confusing from 1858-1860 when they built all the new churches.
