Snersrud / Stenseth

Hi,

A family from Krødsherad lived at the farm "Snersrud" in Norway. All children were born at Snersrud, and they arrived in America in 1849 using the name "Snersrud".

From 1870 - 1880 they dropped the farn name and used "Jacobson", then the entire family started using the name "Stenseth".

Is there a logical reason why someone from Snersrud would take the name Stenseth?

Hi,
They could have family links to the Steinseth farm, but it could just be for a convenient reasons as the American pronunciation of Snersrud does not resemble the way it’s pronunciation by Norwegians… and they might have experienced too many misspellings.

There is a farm Steinseth, gnr. 185, bnr. 1, postal address: Krødsherad, a cotter place/sub farm of Sleviken.
I’m not familiar with the area thus, I’m not able to tell you whether it’s close to the Snersrud.

Stenseth under Slevigen is another cotterplace. I knew some peoplethat came from that Place. They lived in Drammen.

The reason why the Jacobsen Family used Stenset name was because they were living in a cotterplace named Stenset under the North part of Snersrud farm before they left for Calmar ,IOWA in 1849.

Jacob Ellingson and his wife Mari Ellevsdaughter left with the children:
Ellin , born 1843, Ellev 1845, Their daughter Gunhild was left back in Krødsherad..
