Dear Newsgroup ~
Earlier this past year, I posted evidence (see copy of post below)
which proves that the mother of John Vere, 15th Earl of Oxford, was
Alice Colbroke, daughter and co-heiress of Walter Colbroke (died
before 15 March 1488), by Joan (or Jane), daughter and co-heiress of
Richard Tresytheny, of Tresytheny (in St. Columb), Cornwall. The Vere
and Colbroke families are in the ancestry of H.R.H.
Charles, Prince of Wales, and a good many other people.
At the time of my original post, I had few or little details regarding
Alice Colbroke's father, Walter Colbroke. In the intervening time,
I've located the following two Chancery records which involve Alice
Colbroke's father, Walter Colbroke. In the first record, we see that
lands called Colbroke are mentioned. This appears to be a locality
called Colebrook, located immediately southwest of modern Cullompton,
Devon. In the second suit, lands in Silverton are mentioned.
Silverton is located in the same general vicinity as Cullompton.
Walter Courtenay, the plaintiff in the second suit, was the second
husband of Alice (Colbroke) Vere.
C 1/26/352: Thomas, son of Nicholas Colbroke. v. Walter Colbroke:
Lands called Colbroke and Dorwyke. Date: 1386-1486
C 1/129/41: Walter Courteney, knight. v. John, lord Dynham, feoffee
to uses.: Refusal to complete a sale of messuages and land in Broad
Clist and Silverton made by Walter Colbroke and Thomas Raynold.:
Devon. Date: 1486-1529
That Alice Colbroke's father, Walter Colbroke, derived from Colebrook
near Cullompton is proven by yet another law suit dated 1459 involving
Walter Colebroke, Gentleman, of the parish of Cullompton, and Walter,
Abbot of Ford Abbey, which I located recently in a Devonshire
publication. The transcript below is in abbreviated Latin:
"Wal'tus Abbas de fforda p attorn suu op se iiij'to die v'sus Walt'um

[Reference: Report & Transactions of the Devonshire Association for
the Advancement of Science, Literature, & Art, 10 (1878): 365].
The defendant in the above suit, Walter Colebroke, Gentleman, is
surely the father of Alice (Colbroke) (Vere) Courtenay. If someone is
handy with abbreviated Latin, I'd very much appreciate seeing a
translation of the above text.
In my original post, I included a charter dated 1531 issued by John de
Vere, Earl of Oxford, which mentioned his "messuages, etc., in the
city of Exeter, Colbroke, Dorwyke (in Silverton), Morchard Episcopi,
Druysteynton, Newton Abbatis, Silverton and Bradninch and elsewhere.
We see again references to the same places, Colbroke, Dorwyke (in
Silverton), and Silverton, which places are mentioned in the two
Chancery suits above. The last locality named, Bradninch, is located
immediately southwest of Cullompton. Thus, it appears these places
are those associated with the land holdings of the ancestral Colebroke
family in Devonshire.

Dear Newsgroup ~
Complete Peerage 10 (1945): 245 (sub Oxford) has an extremely brief
account of the parents of John Vere, 15th Earl of Oxford (died 1540):
"15. John (de Vere), Earl of Oxford, 2nd cousin and heir male, being
son and heir of John de Vere, by Alice, daughter and coheiress of
Walter Kilrington, otherwise Colbroke, which last named John was son
and heir of Sir Robert de Vere, younger son of the XIth Earl." END OF
QUOTE.
I've earlier posted some documents which pertain to the Earl John's
grandparents, Sir Robert Vere (not de Vere) and his wife, Joan
Courtenay.
Below I've copied 15 abstracts of documents from the Arundell of
Lanherne and Trerice collection found at the Cornwall Record Office,
which abstracts are available online in the helpful A2A Catalogue
(http://www.a2a.org.uk/search/index.asp). These documents show that
Earl John's parents were John Vere (not de Vere), Esquire (living 10
Oct. 1475, died testate before 15 March 1488), of Roseworthy (in
Gwinear), Bejowan (in St. Columb Minor), and Tregenna (in St. Ewe),
Cornwall, by his wife, Alice Colbroke. Alice Colbroke in turn is
identified as the daughter of Walter Colbroke (died before 15 March
1488), by Joan (or Jane), daughter and co-heiress of Richard
Tresytheny, of Tresytheny (in St. Columb), Cornwall. Richard
Tresytheny's wife, Jane, is further identified as daughter and
co-heiress of John Tregennow, of Tregennow Wortha and Tregorrak,
Cornwall. This information greatly expands our knowledge of the
ancestry of Alice (Colbroke) Vere, which previously has been quite
limited. The Vere and Colbroke families are in the ancestry of H.R.H.
Charles, Prince of Wales, and a good many other people.
I might note that Earl John Vere's widowed mother, Alice Colbroke,
married (2nd) before 1491 Walter Courtenay, Knt. (died 7 Nov. 1506),
younger son of Philip Courtenay, Knt., of Powderham and Honiton,
Devon, by Elizabeth, daughter of Walter Hungerford, K.B., K.G., 1st
Lord Hungerford, Speaker of the House of Commons, Steward of the
Household to Kings Henry V and Henry VI, Lord High Treasurer of
England [see J.L. Vivian, Vis. of Devon (1895): 243–250 (Courtenay
pedigree)].
The marriage of Alice Colbroke and Walter Courtenay is proven by the
following Chancery Proceeding found in the helpful online PROCAT
Catalogue (http://catalogue.pro.gov.uk/):
C 1/127/29:
Walter Courteney, knight, and Alice, his wife, executrix of John Vere.
