Hi Sigrund, How are you? Kim forwarded your Nils Gunnar Westby questions to me since I am working on our genealogy. Here is some information and I will send you more later. Nils Gunnar Martinussen born 9-October 1889 in Vestby under Hjelhjelt-farm in Hedmark, Nes Parish (changed his name in America to Nils M. Westby). Nils arrived in Ellis Island, New York City, New York on April 24th 1907. He is listed as traveling aboard the C.F. Tietgen. It seems he was traveling with a friend by the name of Henrik E. Olstad who was also born in Nes Parrish. Nils had only $15.00 U.S when he arrived in New York. On the ship’s manifest Nils and Henrik listed their final destination as Porter Minnesota where they would be staying with a friend by the name of Mr. F.H. Torsen. I can not find the Torsen family in either the 1900 census or the 1910 Porter Minnesota census. The 1910 census show that Nils was living as a servant with the Culshaw family in Nordland Minnesota, and his friend Henrik (Henry) Olstad was living as a well digger in Oakes North Dakota. By the 1920 census Nils was married and living with my Grandmother in Cotton Wood, Montana. I will write more later. I have more reading to do and some more research to verify how Nils met Eva. I hope Lief’s foot will be ok and you get answers from the hospital. Love, Cousin Karen from New Hampshire

Re: Nils Gunnar Martinusen VestbyTil Minnesota 1907
Dear Sigrund,
In the 1917/ 1918 World War I Draft Registration Cards Nels (he changed the way he spelled his name from Nils to Nels) registered as a single man living in Hill County Montana and his occupation is listed as farmer. He registered for the draft June 5th 1917. On that same day Louie Orn my grandmother’s (Eva) brother also registered for the draft. Both men were living in Hill county Montana and both men listed their occupation as farmer. According to my mother both men were homesteading plots of land that were right next to each other. I do not have official Land entry files to validate this information.
According to my mother Louie Orn and Nels Westby met in Montana and became friends. Louie invited Nels to go back to North Dakota for a visit over the holidays in November of 1917. So Louie brought Nels back to the family farm for a visit and that is when he met Eva, my grandmother. At that time my Grandmother and her family were living in Oakes North Dakota. Nels and Eva married December 10, 1917 in Marshall Minnesota.
. My Grandmother was the eighth child of a family of ten children. Her Father, Atel H Olofsson (Orn) was from Shinnige, Ostergotland, Sweden and her mother, Helena Anderson was from Helgeland (or Bardahl), Norway. My Grandmother was born in Verner, North Dakota on September 10, 1898. Later her family moved to Denver North Dakota, and finally to Oakes North Dakota in 1914.
After Nels and Eva got married in 1917 they returned to the homestead in Cotton Wood, Hill County, Montana. My mother Ethel June, was born March 27, 1919 and my uncle Norman Henry Westby was born in August 1920. By 1922 Nels, Eva and family moved back to North Dakota and were living in Jamestown North Dakota. Nels changed his occupation from farmer to sewing machine salesman.
In 1922 Adolf Melvin Westby and Dennis Everett Westby were born and in 1923 Orvald Nels Westby was born. Sadly in 1927 on July 29th Dennis died and December 24th Adolf died. In 1930 Natalie E. Westby was born and November 19, 1930 Nils Westby died. It was a sad three years for my Grandmother and I’m not sure she ever recovered from all the loss. In addition the Great Depression was causing many problems all over the world.
Well that’s all for now Sigrund. If you have anymore questions please ask. I hope you this is interesting for you I have learned so much about my family. I do have more work to collect information on the Norway side of Grandfather Nil’s family. Perhaps you can help.
Much Love,
Cousin Karen
