Johan Andreassen b. 11.02.1844 Grue

Legg inn av gj11124 » 23 mar 2012 23:47:48

hello i hope someone can help me i am looking to find out what happened to my great great grandfather after he went to america would realy like to know where he passed away and when and if he had a family over there this is what i know so far

JOHAN ANDREASSEN b. 11/02/1844 in Grue, Finnskog. d. ? parents were ANDREAS ARNESEN and BARBRA MARIE OLSDATTER
At the census of 1865 he was a servant on the farm "Mørdre Øst" in Næs, Akershus, Romerike. A farm that had 32 large cattle, 7 horses, 8 sheep and 6 pigs.
Johan is a registered alien to Udenes, Nes municipality in 1865.
On the cotter "Kollerud" under the farm "Mørdre øst", the couple leased by Ole Olsen and Karen Haagensdatter, there also lived Karens sister:
13/05/1866 marriage Johan and Hanna Haagensdatter in Udenes in Nes.
They have some time between 1866 and 1868 moved to "Steensbyemoen", Nordkisa in Ullensaker. At the census of 1875 is Johan said to be a “farmer with a little land and timberdriver".

Johan and Hanna had 7 children:

Hansine b. ??.??. 1866 in Næs
Allete b. 29/03/1868 in Ullensaker
Christening 10/5/1868
Marius b. 31/10/1870 in Ullensaker
Christening 26/12/1870
Lina b. 17/05/1873 in Ullensaker
Christening 29/06/1973
Karl Johan b. ??.??. 1875 Ullensaker
BERNT b. 24/02/1878 in Ullensaker
Inga b. ??.??. 1882 in Ullensaker

Whether it was the "timberdriving" which threw a little of himself, or whether there were other reasons it is not known, but the 2 June 1882 Johan went to America. Travel route first went with the boat "Rollo" in Sotaaen line from Christiania (the old name of Oslo) to Hull, England via Kristiansand, Norway. On 10.6.1892 he took the boat "State of Florida" ("State Line") from Glasgow, Scotland via Larne, Ireland to New York and arrived there on 22.6.1882. From there he went on to Chicago.
He has apparently ended up in Stoughton in the State of Wisconsin, just north-west of Chicago. This was certainly the destination for three of his children when they in turn raised by his father to the Midwest. Already the same year as his father stood, pulled the two oldest daughters to America.
Hansine and Alette, 17 and 15 years old and booked them into the steamer "Cameo" in Krantz-line on November 17, 1882. They were then registered with the surname "Stensby".
The oldest boy, Marius waited until he was 20 before he went to Stoughton. This happened with the steamship "Montebello" in Blichfeldt-line, on 3 March 1891. He was also registered with the surname "Stensby".

At the census in 1920 in the United States had Johan changed his name to John Stensby. He has been 76 years and had a residential address Stoughton Ward 1, Dane, Wisconsin. He is registered as a tenant along with several other older men, also Norwegians. He is also registered as a widower.
At the census of the United States in 1930, his place of residence recorded on an old home in Verona, Dane, Wisconsin (about 30 minutes from Stoughton). He was 85 years old.
The remaining children grew up with her mother – Hanna.
At the census of 1900 in Norway, Hanna living on "Stensbyeie" in Ullensaker along with their youngest son Bernt.
Hanna died 4.4.1916. Relatives were Johan, residing in the United States.

In the 1930 census, Johan/John Stensby is listed as an inmate of the Dane County Poor Farm. It is possible that he had some form of mental illness and that his family, unable to care for him or unable to afford care for him, had him "committed"/placed there for the final years of his life.

Some information on the Dane County Poor Farm

Hi Ole Vidar, I have (as a moderator of this forum) changed the title on your query, and also put som Capital Letters on Names and Places throughout, for easier reading and searchability :) It is easier to find Names and Places when we write it that way :)

Happy hunting!!
