Hundo eller Hondo?

Legg inn av gj05515 » 03 mar 2012 20:22:06

Hi,

I am trying to locate the following family in Norway:

Andreas Hundo, born ca. 1838
Bessie P. Hundo, born ca. 1841

Children:

Peter Andreasen Hundo, born ca. 1867
Paul Andreasen Hundo, born ca. 1869

Tha family was in Minnesota, USA, before 1872. They used the name "Hundo" in 1885, and after that the name "Hondo".

Mvh,

Brian

Hi Margit,

I thought you were taking a break? The "Hondo" family is easy to follow in Minnesota,
I just can't figure out where they were in Norway. The children were born after the 1865 census, and they left Norway before 1872. The name is my only clue.

Do they have a copy of the obituary and death certificate? That is the first priority. Definite birth dates? 1900 census states Paul was born May of 1869? His first born daughter was named Bertha, would guess that was his mother Bessie's name also?

I am just taking a break from Facebook genealogy, too many asking questions that they already have the answers to and are just fishing —

Hi!

The only clue I can find is : Hundøya
- øya is a modern ending, before it may have been Hundø.
Hundøya means Dog island.
Hundøya is a small penninsula in a rather big lake; Selbusjøen.
The area is called Selbu, located in the middel of Norway -
close to Trondheim.
I believe it also was the name of a farm.

Thank you Elisabeth. I think you might be correct about Selbo. I think this could be the family:

http://digitalarkivet.no/cgi-win/webcen ... erk=9#ovre

The farm is called "Haanaa". Brynild could be "Bessie" in America. The son, Peter, is born in 1865. The 1900 census for Minneapolis says Peter was born Nov 1865.

I can't open the church records today... :(
I need to check if they had a son named Paul born about 1868.

Andreas Pederson Haanaaen, 33 years old, arrived in Quebec in June of 1869. His wife and children are not listed. If this is the correct family, they may have come later.

Is there a problem with the church records at the Digitalarkivet today?

The farm name is probably 'Hånnåa', written 'Haannaaen' in 'Norske Gaardnavne' vol XIV, p 389, named after the river Hånnåa, coming from Hornsjøen, south of Selbusjøen, nearly halfway to Reinsfjellet. (Honn=horn=antler, å=river). There is no visible traces of the farm in air photos (http://www.norgeibilder.no/) today.

Thanks Margit,

I am 99% sure this is the correct family. On the death records for children of "Andrew and Bessie Hondo", they list her mother as "Brynild Amdal" or "Brynils Kulseth". The birth record for Brynild Paalsdatte shows that she was indeed born at Amdal.

Your Bygdebok says they left the parish in 1866. I know that another son, Paul, was born 1868 or 1869 in Norway. The family arrived in America 1869 or 1870.

I see there is a farm near by called Kulseth, so I wonder if they possibly moved there from Haanaa.... I'll keep looking.

The family is correct - I found the proof I needed.

Brynnild Paulsdatter had a twin sister named Gjertine (both born 27 Aug 1841 in Selbu).
Gjertine married Thomas Johnsen and moved to Kullseth, where they were living in 1865.

I think it is safe to say that when Brynild and her family left Haanaa in 1866, they moved to Kullseth, where Gjertine lived (she is listed in the 1865 census as Gjertrude - but the marriage record gives proof that this is Gjertine).

Brian,
Had you mentioned what you knew from the death certificate of the mother's maiden name, (Amdal/Kulseth) I and many on this message board could have told you exactly where they were from in Norway, Selbu. That is why it is best to give ALL information known with dates when asking others for help on any message board.
I have many ancestors in my family lines from this area.

Margit - I didn't find the records with the mother's maiden names until this morning. I would have known enough to post information that important!
