Estonian/Finnish Ancestors

Legg inn av jean sapsted » 10. november 2004 kl. 17.42

This is a difficult subject. Researching Family History In the United
Kingdom is easy, but researching estonian/finiish?? family history is almost
impossible.

I had my estonian grandmother's name translated, but there are two versions
ukvamberg and ukvolberg. Ukvamberg was the translated name given by the
russian embassy in London but Ukvolberg was the translated name given by a
linguist in Cardiff university.

I really need some advice as to how to proceed.

Any suggestions please.

Not at all. The Finnish church records from the 18th century and
onwards are rather well preserved and available. Other sources exist
from further past. Agreeably research can be hard from abroad. These
two links should help you forward.

Finnish genealogy, search engine etc. in English:

Estonian Genealogical Society in English:

Translitteration of cyrillic characters is not always straightforward.
The embassy probably conforms to their instructions for latin
representation of names in passports, which is not necessarily the
phonologically corresponding form. For sure I can say that none of
these names exist or have existed as family names in Finland. With
Google you get a few hits with both "Ukvalberg" and "UKVOL'BERG", all
of them referring to what seem to be Russian science publications.

You should probably contact one of the Estonian Genealogical Society
members with all the data you have about your grandmother. They will
surely guide you on. Good luck!
