English, can someone translate a death record for me?

Legg inn av gj14425 » 28 okt 2011 06:02:04

I just need some help reading the death record of my ancestor. I found the record here: http://www.arkivverket.no/URN:kb_read?idx_kildeid=850&uid=ny&idx_side=-353 and I cannot read very well in Norwegian. I am hoping that someone can translate or explain in English. He is at the very top of the page, #88, Daniel Stiansen.

Takk.

It's not the clearest text, but I think it says:

"Omkom paa Bandak, formendtlig i beruselse"

"Perished on Bandak [lake], presumably while intoxicated"

Bandak is quite far away from Øyestad, maybe it is more likely it says Vandet. That is not specific, it could mean a lake or a river.

Thank you. I appreciate your help. I am also having trouble figuring out what is meant by Slodelien - Lebro in the fourth column. What is that column for - place of residence? Is that perhaps a farm name? And what is meant by the letters that come before Daniel's name?

Is the first date the date of death, and the second date the date of burial? I am assuming that "Alder" means age?

This is correct.

Opholdssted/Place of Living: Sladelien. Can't find anything resembling that on the map, unfortunately.

Fødested/Place of birth: Libro - Probably Libru near Arendal

The letters/acronyms before his name describe his occupation. Gdb could mean Gardbruker=farmer.

Thank you! I don't think I could have figured all of that out on my own. Thank you for telling me about Libru.

I typed Sladelien into Google earth and it substituted Slåttedalen, which is 172 KM from Arendal. All of Daniel's children were baptized in Øyestad. Seems odd that he would die in Øyestad if he lived in Slåttedalen. So maybe Slåttedalen is wrong.

Also, on Ancestry.com, another user has his son's name as Tallak Danielson Slodien. So maybe it is a farm name after all. Tallak moved to Minnesota, USA. So perhaps Slodien is an "Americanized" name. I have tried to contact the person who has this information, but no response.

Could Sladelien be Sladelan = Sladeland ? or Slåtteland ? Or somewhere else?

On the line below, it is written Egelan, where lan after Ege is written in alomst same way as in the "Sladelien".

I'm quite sure this is the place, it's called Slåtteli today. It's just 1km from Libru.

I'm not entirely sure about the interpretation "Omkom paa vandet", since it would normally just say Druknet - Drowned. Maybe he was found dead in his boat or something like that.

I think it's the other way round, there is a place Eikelia in Øyestad, which would fit with Egelien

Yes, I agree with your theory about Slåtteli (Sladelien) og Eikelia (Egelien)

Now I notice that the death record just below him seems to be a relative. They died and were buried on the sme dates. I have found out that Daniel's father's name was Stian Olsen, and the woman listed just below Daniel is named Ingeborg Olsdr. Besides that, her birth place of Egelien is where Daniel's father had lived as well.

Does anyone know whether there was a newspaper in that area back in the early 1800s?
