MARTENS
Hi,
Guess I will tell you the whole story of why I am looking for MARTENS in
Norway when I am a POWER...born and bred in New Zealand and living in
Australia for the past 25 years.
POWERs came from the district of de la POHER in Brittany and Sire de POER
accompanied William the Conquer to England in 1066. In 1177 four POHER
brothers accompanied Henry II to fight in Ireland and were given the County
of Waterford, Ireland for their help. In about the 1300s they changed their
name to POWER. Since then they have spread through out the world. In
research I have finally got back to 1787 in Waterford, Ireland with my
Mathew POWER (Master Mariner)...having helped a guy in England research his
family here in Ballarat, Australia....he reciprocated and looked for Mathew
in the Kew Records Office in London
Just over two years ago I was on the NEW-ZEALAND-L List and a guy was
asking for participants with his surname to join a Y-DNA test so I emailed
him and asked him about it. It is a good way of getting past your "brick
wall" as if you find someone else with the exact same Y-DNA it means you
both have the exact same ancestor. It can only be done by a male
though...that means an uncle or brother to the ladies I guess. So two years
ago I started a project for the POWER et al and now have about 23
participants. I finally did my own one last November and discovered I had
Viking Y-DNA. I could not understand this as my ancestors were said to be
Normans that came with William the Conquer....so I started reading 11 books
on the Vikings, and then a few more that were about the Normans. Then it all
fell into place. The Normans were Vikings who came with Rollo (Hrulf Ganger)
to France in 911AD. Before I read these books, though, I had found I was an
exact 25 match with a guy in
Illinois, USA with the surname MARTENS! His ancestors came from Germany
and he had got back to the 1700s too. At that time we knew we were Nordic
haplogroup I. Now we know we are I1a which is Viking. I have found out that
there are no MARTENS in Germany prior to 1300s....so where to look. Then in
the Viking books it mentoned a Brooch Box that was of Norwegian design and
was owned by MARTENS. It was said to have come from the 800-900AD era and
was found in Gotland, Sweden. I looked on http://www.familysearch.org under Search
and used only the surname MARTENS. From this I discovered all the MARTENS
were in Norway...none in Sweden or Denmark....although a few MARTENSSEN were
there. There were others around the world....like Indonesia but that did not
count to me. And here I am.
Recently they started up a Viking Y-DNA Project to invite all men of Viking
extract to join them. The Co-ordinator might be able to help you if you have
a male for the test....Carl-Johan Swaerdenheim.... [email protected] He covers
the three Viking countries of Norway, Sweden and Denmark. Should include
Normandy eh.
To give you a wee bit of an idea of what I am talking about you can have a
look at our site http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~dnapower With our
site though, you need to run your arrow over each picture, in case there is
another photo under it, and then click on that picture to see the
photo....click on that photo to return to the first page eh.
Hooray,
Warren.

Rustung).
2) Dorthe Håkonsdatter Adelsten av Egge (Married Knud Pedersen
