Hi All,
I am making enquiries as to whether there is anyone on this List with the surname of MARTENS please? I suspect that way back in the distant past this may have been the name of my paternal ancestor. I also note that there was a Broach Box found in Gotland, Sweden...of Norwegian design....that was supposed to have been made in the 800-900AD and owned by MARTENS. Would love to hear from anyone who can assist me with anything on this family. Thank you.

Re: MARTENS
Hi Warren.
My name is Allan MARTENS Andersen, so I guess I qualify for answering
your question. My family probably lived in Copenhagen in Denmark from
aruond 1754 to present day. It originated from Schleswig in Northern
Germany.
Martens is a name used in Germany, Benelux and other Germanic speaking
countries. It would not a priori be a scandinavian but a German name.
You would have to find out where in Europe Your family came from.
If you should find out, that the familys origin was Denmark, you are
most welcome to contact me again.
Sincerely From Allan M. Andersen, Denmark..

Re: MARTENS
Hi Allan,
Thank you for your reply. My surname is POWER and I came from New
Zealand, where I was born, to Australia, some 25 years ago. I grew up
with Per and Ib Schrader and have since worked with Ole Andersen.
In researching my family I am only back to 1787 where my ancestor,
Mathew POWER (Master Mariner), was born in Waterford, Ireland. I started
a Y-DNA Project for the POWERs a couple of years ago and then last
November did it myself. I found I was I1a Haplogroup which is claimed to
be Viking.....and I had an exact match with Jack MARTENS. He lives in
Illinois, USA. However, below is his family....from Mecklenburg Germany.
This gets rough as my lot came with William the Conquer in 1066 as
Normans. When I started looking I discovered that the Normans were
originally Vikings that arrived in France in 911AD. This, of course, you
already know....I didn't! Now...to have the same exact match means we
both came from the same ancestor....way back I guess. I read about one
son going west (to England/France?) and the other going East (to
Germany?) So they would both have had their father's Y-DNA eh. I guess I
am hoping all the MARTENS in Norway, Denmark, Sweden, and Germany will
decide to go out and do their Y-DNA. One, because Jack has only himself
and his son in the MARTENS Project, and two, maybe I will find another
exact match. Even if they did not go with Jack they could join the
Viking Project....in which they do not even have to be MARTENS or POWER.
This is Carl's email address if there is anyone thinking that way eh
.....My own e-mail in all Viking related matters is from now on
[email protected].
Thank you for any assistance you can give me in either finding
participants interested in finding out if they are Viking or any help in
tracing back into the past for Jack's family in Mecklenburg.
Hooray,
Warren.
Warren,
Our 25 markers matched. I didn’t get an exact match with any others in
the Power tribe. (I did get that result with my son, Andrew). Have you
tried the 37 marker upgrade?
I have spent some time in the Schwerin archives digging for information
on my ancestors. It appears that when Mecklenburg was occupied by the
Danes, the family name was Martenßen, or son of Marten. With our rather
recent common ancestor, it could be that a Power became a Martens after
ending up in Denmark/Mecklenburg. Don’t know if we’ll ever solve that
one.

The BBC tried a viking dna project and abandoned it
because so called "viking dna" is indistinguishable from saxon dna because
they both originate in Northern Germany in hunter gather times after the
last ice age
http://www.bbc.co.uk/history/ancient/vi ... lood.shtml
but it was an excellent archealogical review
So all you two have in common is a geographical location in northern Germany

Re: MARTENS
Hi Hugh,
You are right in the fact I do not know the name of our ancestor whom,
it would appear, came from Germany, but who ever it was we both are said
to have come from him simply because of the same Y-DNA. The other guy is
now a MARTENS and I am a POWER but that has occurred further down the
track....when they started using surnames. If there were any other
people who had the exact same Y-DNA then they too would have come from
the same ancestor....but maybe through another brother.....as I
understand it. We all get our Y-DNA from our father.
Also, I beg to differ about the Viking Testing through the BBC or what
ever the show was called. I think it was called the Blood of Vikings? At
present they are still carrying out the testing and the guy I have
spoken to about it is Steven Harding at [email protected]
Unfortunately though, they are only testing about half a dozen markers
which will not show enough of the picture. For example the marker 455 is
needed to show that a haplogroup is I1a (Viking) and this only gets
tested on the 25 marker test.
Thank you for your imput to my quest.
Hooray,
Warren.
