Meaning of lots oldermand, 1801

Legg inn av dn35567 » 10. august 2018 kl. 3.09

In looking at an 1801 census record for Trondheim, the Yrke field says 'lots oldermand'

We are both interested in what this means, but also if there is a dictionary which would help us find terms from this time period.

Thanks so much,

john

A "Lots", usually written "Lods" at the time, and "los" in modern Norwegian, is a pilot.

The oldermand is logically the leader of a pilot station

A very useful dictionary of the period is the "Historisk ordbog over det danske sprog 1700-1950"

Takk så mye, Matthias!

That is quite a dictionary and I have shared the link with others who are interested in these types of questions.

You have taught us and we are passing it along.

Med vennig hilsen from our stevne,

John
