Filip Sahlin Johansen til Canada

Legg inn av gj14983 » 31. januar 2012 kl. 20.32

His birth, no. 71: http://www.arkivverket.no/URN:kb_read?i ... x_side=-20

Leaving Norway: http://digitalarkivet.no/cgi-win/webcen ... 73514#ovre

Arriving in Halifax, Nova Scotia 20. april 1926: http://search.ancestry.com/iexec?htx=Vi ... id=2971272

And travelling from Montreal in Canada, via Liverpool in England to Norway, presumeably for a visit in 1935.

He might have settled anywhere in Canada, I really don't know where to start looking. Did he marry, what did he do for a living, when did he die, would appreciate help with this search!

Hi Kari,

If you look just above Filip's surname on the ship record documenting his arrival in Halifax, Canada you will see that someone has written 'Nat 28/8/39'. This would mean that Filip was naturalised as a British Subject on August 28, 1939 somewhere in Canada. Providing this date applies to Filip and not the individual listed above him, it means that there should be a naturalisation record for Filip in the database Canadian Naturalisation. However, I took a look in the database and did not find him, under the name provided or variations on his name. (i.e., Johnsen, Johanson, etc.).

The vast majority of Norwegians who immigrated to the Dominion of Canada (and even those who immigrated to the United States) usually came through the Canadian ports of Montréal and Québec City, both in the Province of Québec, and Halifax in the Province of Nova Scotia.

I took a look at Filip's ship record of arrival in England and it states that he embarked in Québec City, not Montréal (although the sailed from Montréal). This can be a clue since the travel time by car between Montréal and Québec City is about three hours. All of this to say, that if Filip had been living in Western Canada where many Norwegians ended up living, then he would not have embarked a ship to Europe from Québec City, he would have done it from Montréal. To me, this means that when he immigrated to Canada in 1926 that he settled in the Province of Québec, perhaps somewhere closer to Québec City than Montréal. Anyhow, this is just a theory.

I'll do a bit of digging to see what I can find. In the meantime, what else do you know about Filip's life in Canada? Even rumours would be helpful!

Thank you.

Thank you Erik, for the information.
I know nothing of Filip really, except that his family was very religious and probably belonged to a dissenterchurch in Vestfold, Norway when Filip emigrated. The information comes from my mother and her siblings who were Filip's cousins. Most of these are dead, and the rest are too old and sick to remember now.
