I have someone with FTM 9 who wants step by baby step
instructions on creating a GEDCOM, I don't use FTM
so I can't help.

It's pretty easy! My version is 7.5 though so I can't be certain the
commands & screens are the same. They either are or they aren't and if
anything doesn't look right, then Cancel out.
With the tree loaded & on the screen that you want a GEDCOM for click
File-Copy/Export Family File
In the screen that comes up, tell it where to put the file on disk.
(assume they know how to do that). In same screen, select GEDCOM(*.GED)
Click Save and click OK on next screen to accept defaults.
Voila! That's all there is to it.

It is impossible to *OVER EMPHASIZE* the need to unselect .ftw and
simultaneously select .ged as the file type. It is a dropdown menu
signaled by a small nearly invisible inverted delta at the end of a box.

That step is absolutely essential for success.
Agreed, for as far back as v3.2 (g).
