Fix for FTM glitch?

Legg inn av History Fan » 10. september 2004 kl. 20.35

About three weeks ago, I posted here about a problem I was having
with Family Tree Maker (FTM) 8. Whenever I tried to access the Internet
thru FTM's Internet menu, my web browser (IE 6) would freeze up for several
seconds. FTM itself would also freeze up for a while. Trying to access the
Internet thru FTM also caused problems with rebooting my computer. A window
would suddenly pop up saying FTM was having difficulty in closing, even
though it was no longer running. I noticed these glitches on my Windows XP
computer and similar ones on my Windows ME computer. I recently upgraded to
FTM 9, but the same problems occurred.

So, I went to FamilyTreeMaker.com to search for an answer to this
glitch, and I may have found it. The steps below "officially" apply to FTM
9-11, but I suspect they would work for FTM 8, too. Anyway, I followed the
steps outlined below, and so far, the problems have not resurfaced. Here is
a repost of what the instructions say:

Question: When I click on an option under the Internet menu, like
Genealogy.com or My Home Page, a browser does not come up and Family Tree
Maker stops responding.

Answer: Modifying the ftw.ini file has worked for most customers who have
experienced this problem. Please follow the instructions below to modify
your ftw.ini file:

1. Open Family Tree Maker.
2. Click on Help, then System Information.
3. From the dropdown box in the lower left-hand corner, choose FTW.ini.
The FTW.ini file opens in Notepad.
4. Locate the section of the file labeled [Online].
Click just after the name of this section, and press Enter, so you have
created a new blank line just under the [Online] heading.
5. Type, or copy and paste, the following into that blank line:
InternetMenuQuery=False
You should now see:
[Online]
InternetMenuQuery=False
and then there may be several other lines underneath the [Online] section.
6. Click on the File menu in Notepad and choose Save.
7. Close the Notepad window, click OK on the System Information dialog box,
and then close Family Tree Maker.
8. From the Start menu, choose Shut Down and restart your computer.

Does nothing for my v8 copy of FTM. It still goes clunk.
