Who owns and sells Family Tree Maker

Legg inn av Bill Zack » 27. august 2004 kl. 17.35

I am a bit confused. What company owns and sells Family Tree Maker?
Borderbund? Encore or ?. I have searched the posts but I cannot seem
to find this information.

Thanks

It's a post by Paul Burchfield who used to be the FTM service rep and
explains the corporate ownership over the years and now.

Thanks for the information. I am still a bit confused, however.
Don't both Broderbund and Encore sell a package called "Family Tree
Maker"? CompUSA seems to be selling:

1. Family Tree Maker Standard 11.2 and Family Tree Maker Collectors
Edition (PC) by Encore Software.

2. Family Tree Maker Collectors Edition(PC), Family Tree Maker 11(PC)
and Family Tree Maker 11 Deluxe(PC) by Broderbund. Are these really
all the same package or different packages with the same name?

I am trying to decide which version to buy and from who.

Thanks

Encore Software is a publishing complany with marketing agreements to
publish FTM and other titles. Just put "encore software" into your favorite
search engine and you should get to the company and more information.

I believe that Broderbund was purchased by Ancestry. Ancestry also runs the
Rootsweb sites and has for quite awhile. I believe Ancestry also owns and
operates a number of other lists as well.

A bit more complicated. Something like:

Someone wrote FTM 1, years ago.
Broderbund purchased FTM (maybe from another company)
TLC bought Broderbund
Mattel bought TLC

I don't know who started genealogy.com the 2nd time (the 1st time, it
was started by some German or German-American genealogists and they
abandoned it for some reason, then some company bought it from the
register.

It seems at some time, TLC or BB owned genealogy.com (BB more likely).

Then genealogy.com was made an independant company that purchased
other softwares like Roots/UFT and Family Origin with the purpose
of eliminating them.

Few years later, ancestry.com purchased rootsweb and then
genealogy.com.

Legacy has a better reputation. FTM is changing versions nearly
each year and the updates seem to be expensive (someone complained
about that in this newsgroup).

Broderbund still markets FTM (see the earlier reference to Paul
Burchfield's posts). The packages are the program, and lots of bundled
CDs that are of dubious value. But the answer to your question is
Neither! If you've been following this thread at all, then you must
realize that there are at least 3 or 4 programs that are more
recommended:

TMG
RootsMagic (my choice)
Legacy
PAF

The only one of these I don't have is Legacy, but I can assure you,
any of the four is a better choice than either of the FTM choices you
list. And oh yes, I do own an older version of FTM, and still use it.

Yes. The company name was Banner Blue.

TLC bought Broderbund
Mattel bought TLC

Well, actually G.c or whoever never "owned" Family Origins, just the

marketing rights to it, which were acquired when the parent company
acquired Parson's software, which marketed FO for Bruce for several
years. Once the sale of FO was controlled by G.c., which never pushed
it, I guess Bruce decided it was better to start with a new program,
than continue improving a product that was "held back" by the
marketing company in favor of it's "flagship" product, FTM.

Few years later, ancestry.com purchased rootsweb and then
genealogy.com.

Bill,

Here's a link to little history of Family Tree Maker and its owners:
http://love2tap.com/paul/index.php?p=29

Ever since Banner Blue Software was sold to Broderbund, Family Tree
Maker carried the Broderbund logo due to its brand recognition. It was
Broderbund's sales sales force who sold Family Tree Maker into the
retail channel. In fact, even after the company Genealogy.com was
created and spun off as a separate company (and then acquired by A&E
Television and then MyFamily.com, Inc.), Broderbund continued to sell
Family Tree Maker into the retail channel. That's why you see boxes
with the Broderbund logo.

Now, Encore has acquired the rights to sell Family Tree Maker in the
retail channel.

I hope that helps.

We used to complain about your long sig, Paul, now we can't tell who
you are without a program. :-)

Are you still FTM and with what company?

If FTM I have a question.

My grandson is getting married in Vegas on the 20th. His
grandmother-in-law to be has the family history on FTM. It is listed
by generation which is hard to follow. Does FTM have a Descendant
Narrative Report or even a descendant report with dates if not the
narrative?

If it depends on the version, I think she has exactly what she's going
to have. She's got thousands on names and I only want a few
generations and I don't think she knows how to do that.

Hugh,

While I did a short stint with MyFamily.com, Inc. while they
transitioned the operation of Genealogy.com from California to Utah, I
wasn't offered a permanent position (although I wouldn't have moved to
Utah anyway--with no offense intended to Utahians). Happily, I'm
currently an employee of Apple Computer.

I wish your grandson well. To answer your specific question, Family
Tree Makes does have a couple of different descendant-based narrative
reports as well as the outline descendant tree (in addition to
graphical trees).
