(Eriksdatter) Lia.
http://search.bcarchives.gov.bc.ca

Sometimes early 1900 my uncle - Gilbert Braaten - went to America. He was baptised Gulbrand Skaalebraaten, B: 1887-06-24.
He was the eldest brother of my father, born in Hedalen in the community Soer-Aurdal in the region of Valdres, Norway. His Father was Ole Gunvaldsen Skaalebraaten, B: 1862-09-09.
I was told as a little boy that he first went to US, but I cannot find his emigration?
I have for a long time wanted to find out what happened to him. I know he got married to a woman called Annie, and she might be Scottish. My father told me once that he had heard that they got two girls, and I have tried to search to get some information, but haven't succeeded.
Some weeks ago I found a document stored in an old building where Gilbert was born in 1887, and where he took his first steps and was learning to speak. This document was a calendar from December 1938 made from a car dealer (Ford) in Tofield. On the back side there is written Gilbert and Annie Braaten and the following: " R.R.# 2. Tofield Alla "
I think this is an address in Alberta, Canada.
After some more search, I found both Gilbert and Annie in the British Columbia Death Index: 1872 to 1979
Both died in Surrey, BC. Gilbert 1965-10-17, when he was 77 years, and Annie 1982-03-07, when she was 83 years old.
But still I haven't any information if there was/is relatives left. To come further: Is there someone who can help me to find his emigration? Was Gilbert living in US before he settled down in Canada?
Best regards Jan

Re: Gilbert Braaten fra Sør-Aurdal til Canada og ble
Hei Jan,
When are you coming to Canada? Will you be visiting in Alberta? I hope you get this before you come to Canada and that it will be of help to you.
From the Local History Book As the Wheels Turn: a history of Rosalind, Kelsey and districts we find that Gilbert married Annie COWIE. You can see the very little they say about that at http://www.ourfutureourpast.ca/loc_hist ... px?id=4556
There is a reference to Mr and Mrs Braaten in the book The Fort Pitt Trail: mostly tales of pioneer days, which is not available on-line. I have asked for someone to look up that information for me later today at the Edmonton Branch of the Alberta Genealogical Society. If it is Gilbert and Annie there may be more information about their family in that book. I will post whatever I learn as soon as I hear, that should be by klokken 20 Norges tid.
The Death Records should have their next-of-kin's name and address on them. Annie's Death Record would likely be more informative than Gilbert's because it is more recent.
I have also found some information on Annie's siblings which may lead to her nieces and nephews who may know about Annie's children. If you would like that information please let me know and I will send it to you. Annie's parents and siblings are buried in the area around Camrose, Alberta.
