Newbie with Question about Henry VIII

Legg inn av Cody Phoenix » 4. februar 2008 kl. 6.10

Hi y'all,

I'm Cody Marie and have been researching both sides of my family for several
years now.

The question I have involves the parentage of Sir John Perrot. I've read
that he is the illegitimate son of Henry VIII and others say he is the son
of Thomas Perrot. What is the general consensus on this list?

Thanks for your input.

Cody

You may already have done this, but a search of the archives
(available through google) will bring up a couple of items on this
topic, including a good summary fby John Carmi Parsons from back in
1998 (!).

I don't know what sources you will have seen on the subject, but for
what it is worth, here is what the Oxford Dictionary of National
Biography has to say about Sir John's parentage and the Henrician
claim:

"He was possibly the youngest of the three children of Thomas Perrot
(1504/5-1531), landowner, and his wife, Mary (c.1511-c.1586), daughter
of James Berkeley (d. c.1515) of Thornbury, Gloucestershire, and
Hilton, Cambridgeshire, and his wife, Susan (d. c.1521), widow of
William Vele.... Contrary to the popular and oft-quoted myth (the
origin of which may be attributed to the work of Sir Robert Naunton),
Perrot's mother was never a mistress of Henry VIII and he,
consequently, was not the king's bastard son."

(biographical article by Roger Turvey)

Hope this helps.
