William The Conqueror & Edward The Confessor's Wife?

Legg inn av Dana S. Leslie » 30. januar 2008 kl. 2.41

I'm reading Edward Rutherfurd's historical novel *London*. At one point, he
mentions in passing, that William The Conqueror married into the family of
Edward The Confessors wife. I've never heard this before, and I cannot find
any likely connection between
Edith Godwinesdatter and Matilda of Flanders, unless, possibly, I have the
wrong wife of Baldwin V as mother of Matilda.

Can anyone elucidate? Thank you.

The only possible connection is based on some extremely hypothetical
material tracing Earl Godwin to the house of Wessex. Matilda is known
to descend from the house of Wessex, but that makes her just as much a
relative of Edward, so this can't be what the author has in mind.
Looking at the Danish side, there is no line to Matilda, but there are
fictional lines to William. Basically, the author is making it up as
he goes along.
