Dear Douglas , John Ravilious and others,
The Surtees
Society`s publication of York wills Eboracensia p 143 gives the following
information in the will of Hawise de Aske in 1464 , proved 1465, widow of William
Selby and Roger Aske Esq of Aske. the latter husband died in 18 Henry VI
(1440/1) and left a son and heir Conan Aske ( 23 in 1427 -died after May 21, 1465
when He asked to be allowed to hold a quiet mass in his home. Conan`s wife
maiden name is not indicated , but at the time she was named Katherine. Conan`s
mother Elizabeth, here referred to as the youngest daughter and heir of William
Pert by Joan, daughter of Sir Stephen Scrope. and to have been dead 7 Henry Vi
(ca 1428) when Conan recieved a share of his grandfather Pert`s estate as her
heir. however in De Controversia in curia militari inter Ricardum le Scrope
et Robertum ... by Richard le Scrope p 332 says Roger Aske`s 1st wife was the
daughter of Joan Scrope`s 2nd husband Sir Roger Swillington.
De Controversia p 331 gives Roger Aske`s parents as Conan
Aske born 1348 - died unknown and Eleanor , daughter of Roger Medlam who died
in 1428 / 9, Roger being 38 years of age at her decease
Note: this Eleanor is elsewhere referred to as Eleanor de Widdrington. her
husband Conan Aske Esq is given as the son of Conan Aske and Emma, daughter of
Ingram Boynton.
Sincerely,
James W Cummings

Margaret Swillington, daughter of Roger Swillington by his wife Joan
is called "heiress" of her father, that would then mean, for the other
girl to go here, she also has to be an heiress.

That might be one thing to explore.

If Conan Aske were already age 23 in 1427 when he was held heir to his
grandfather William Pert (who had evidently just died) and no mention
was made (was it?) of William's widow Joan then I suggest that Joan
was dead.

Roger Swillington died in 1418
(cite http://books.google.com/books?id=VNQKAA ... nhill+1449)

So I suggest that Roger wasn't Joan's second husband, but rather her
first. And William Pert was her second.
